What is the Penny for Pinellas? • A 1% sales tax paid by everyone who spends money in Pinellas County. • Nearly one third of revenues are paid by tourists and seasonal visitors. • The 1% sales tax was originally enacted in 1990 and renewed in 2000 & 2010. • The tax is NOT collected on essentials such as groceries and medicine. • The tax applies to ONLY the first $5,000 of a single purchase. • Revenue stays LOCAL. It is collected and reinvested in capital improvement within Pinellas County. • The revenue collected allows investment in infrastructure without utilizing property tax revenue. Annually, the Penny generates the equivalent of 2.4 mills of property tax value ($240 for the average home in Pinellas County) • The City has received over $40 million since the Penny was first enacted in 1990.
What can the Penny be used for? • Investment in Infrastructure: Infrastructure is defined to include any fixed capital expenditure or outlay associated with construction, reconstruction or improvement of public facilities that have a life expectancy of 5 Years or more. • Land acquisition and improvement • Fire and Police vehicles and associated equipment with a life expectancy of 5 years or more • Fire and police equipment with a life expectancy of 5 years or more
