Continents ■ A continent is defined as a large unbroken land mass completely surrounded by water (some are connected by land bridges) ■ There are seven – do you know them??
Pangaea The name of a huge super continent that scientists believe split apart about 200 million years ago, forming different continents.
Mountain An area that rises steeply at least 1,000 feet above sea level; Hill An area that rises slowly, and is below 1,000 feet above sea level
Oceans ■ Oceans are the largest bodies of water in the world. Ocean water is saltwater, and covers three fourths of the earth’s surface.
Desert ■ Desert is an area of land that receives very little rain and has very little vegetation
Canyon A deep, narrow valley with steep sides; often has a stream flowing through it. Valley Low land between a mountain or hill; also may have a stream flowing through it
Rivers, Streams and Creeks They are all names for water flowing on the Earth's surface. Creeks are usually the smallest, then streams, then rivers.
Peninsula An area of land almost completely surrounded by water and connected to the mainland by an isthmus.
Island An area of land completely surrounded by water.
Plateau A large, flat area that rises above the surrounding land; at least one side has a steep slope.
Plains A large area of flat or gently rolling land.
Volcano An opening in the earth’s surface through which molten rock, ashes, and gasses from the Earth’s interior escape.
