  1. ORPC Alaska Projects REAP November Forum Anchorage, Alaska November 14, 2012 D. Douglas Johnson, Director of Business Development, Alaska Monty Worthington, Director of Project Development, Alaska

  2. Alaskan Tidal and River Hydrokinetic Projects • Cook Inlet Tidal Energy Project: • Fire Island Site - FERC Preliminary Permit in 2008 • East Foreland Site – FERC Preliminary permit in 2010, will be ORPC’s first pilot project in Cook Inlet. • RivGen Commercialization Project utilizing several test/ demonstration sites: • Nikiski “Virtual River” test site • FERC permitted site at Nenana on the Tanana River • Kvichak River at Igiugig • False Pass Ocean/Tidal energy feasibility study 2

  3. East Foreland Tidal Energy Project Project Development Work Completed: • Acoustic Doppler Current Profile Resource Assessment • Complete Multi-beam Bathymetry of Project Area • Test deployment and retrieval of Hydrophone for Passive Acoustic Monitoring of beluga whales, deployed for overwinter deployment of two Hydrophones • Identified potential come ashore locations • Completed REF Grant Agreement with AEA 3

  4. Work Completed at East Foreland in 2011 • Circulation modeling performed at UAA • Stationary ADCP survey attempted at 5 sites, data recovered from two sites • Potential interconnect sites have been identified 4

  5. ADCP Data from Northernmost Site • 5

  6. Multi-beam Bathymetry completed in June 2012 6

  7. Hyrdophone test and overwinter deployment Utilized Directional Autonomous Seafloor Acoustic Recorders (DASARs) developed under Department of Energy (DOE) grant to ORPC to collect data on beluga whale and marine mammal use of the Fire Island and East Foreland Project areas • Collected six months data at Fire Island in winter 2010 - 2011 • Performed 1 month test deployment of single DASAR to test deployment and recovery system at East Foreland in September • Deployed two DASARs on 10/21/12 for overwinter period 7

  8. UAA Suspended Sediment Flume DOE grant to ORPC is • funding flume studies at UAA to circulate high silt content water and test critical device components Testing several types • of bearings/seals in Cook Inlet water samples Will determine best • suited bearing/seals and maintenance cycles 8

  9. RivGen™ Power System – Built for remote Alaskan conditions 9

  10. RivGen™ Pontoon Support Structure • Built and tested in Alaska • Fabricated and assembled by Marsh Creek in Wasilla • Tested at the Nikiski “virtual river” test site adjacent to the Arctic Slope Regional Corp Rig Tenders Dock • Verified pontoon support structure functionality • Will complete additional testing in fall 2012 and spring of 2013 10

  11. False Pass Reconnaissance study – ADCP survey ORPC was contracted by the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association (APIA) to complete a tidal and ocean current resource assessment. ORPC worked with APICDA, Benthic GeoScience, NREL, and TerraSond to complete the survey this fall 11

  12. Hazard Assessment Reconnaissance of 7 sites in the vicinity of False Pass performed to assess viability to deploy ADCP equipment at each site 12

  13. Two ADCP’s deployed late September- early October • One ADCP under loan from NREL at northern site offshore of False Pass Harbor • Second ADCP at southern site in narrow constriction of Isanotski Strait • Both ADPCs deployed with redundant recovery systems to enhance recovery probability in harsh high current environment • Programmed to collect data for full lunar cycle (29.5 days) • Two HOBO water level sensors also deployed North and South of False Pass to enhance UAA model fidelity 13

  14. ADCP’s recovered in late October - early November Challenging early winter weather conditions… Some near misses… Success at last! Unusual Marine mammal siting… 14

  15. Continued Project Development work 2012-2013 Continue to pursue additional funding with application to Round 6 of the • REF for funding for the TidGen™ Array Project at East Foreland • Additional field work in 2013 field season including continued Acoustic Monitoring, ADCP surveys, and geotechnical work. • Working with HEA on economic analysis of valuation of power produced from the project • Working to submit Federal Regulatory Commission (FERC) Final License Application by January 2014 to be prepared for installation of first test device in July 2014 • Awarded Emerging Energy Technology Fund (EETF) grant from AEA and the Denali Commission to test RivGen™ device at Nikiski in 2013 and perform Demonstration project at Igiugig in 2014 • Analyze data for False Pass Survey and perform economic analysis of potential for tidal/ocean current energy with APIA 15
