GY201/1BC1 Bachelor of Commerce Degree: First Year • Lectures commence on Monday September 9 th as per online timetables, at www.nuigalway.ie/commerce • Semester One (12 weeks): 9 th September -1 st December • Study Week beginning 4 th December with Examinations 11 – 22 nd December. Degree: Optional Modules Skills for Success – a module focusing on university skills such as writing and presenting, planning, research skills, etc. 100% continuous assessment and Business Law I - important for Accounting Exemptions at the end of your degree Or Spanish or German or Gaeilge • Available as an alternative to Skills for Success + Business Law I • Beginners or Advanced Level available in both Spanish and German. No previous knowledge of these languages is necessary for the Beginners module. • End of Year: you may be eligible for transfer to 2 nd yr. of B. Comm. International or B. Tutorials / Learning Communities Lectures – have 250+ students in attendance Tutorials – small classes, fewer than 50 in number In first year we call our tutorials Learning Communities Learning Communities – tutorials with the same group of students for each module, where students come together, engage together and learn together Timetables – look out for lectures (begin in Week 1) and tutorials (begin in Week 1-3).   19. Progression to Second Year • Must pass ALL modules in First Year to progress to second year • No capping (max mark is 40%) of repeats, in first year. • Pass = 40% in all modules • There is a compensation provision J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics

  20. Progression: Compensation provision The Pass standard is 40% in each module. However a student with marks less than 40% in one or more modules will be deemed to have passed provided: - The aggregate mark for all modules of the year is at least 40% - No mark is below 35% - Not more than 15 ECTS have marks in range 35 – 39% Note: Where one or more of these conditions have not been met, each module with a mark below 40% must be repeated. Marks of 40% and above are carried forward to the next session and are not repeatable. You cannot repeat a module you have passed J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics

Examinations and Honours Honours • H1 70% on the aggregate • H2.1 60% on the aggregate • H2.2 50% on the aggregate First Year Examinations • Students must present for the initial exam in a module • To defer for serious personal/medical reasons, you must seek permission from the School Office.   22. Autumn (Repeat Examinations) • Fail in Sem I or Sem II: repeat failed modules in August • Fail in autumn: get exemptions in all modules passed; repeat any failed modules at Sem I, Sem II or autumn sessions of next academic year • Two year rule: First BComm must be passed within two academic years from the date of entering the BComm programme. • Must pass First Year to progress to second year J.E.   23. Module Registration • Students must register online by 16 th September www.nuigalway.ie/reg • Change optional modules – deadline is 23 rd September • Semester II - TBA (mid to late January) • YOU WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO CHANGE YOUR MIND AFTER THIS J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics
