Obstetric Simulation “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn” Benjamin Franklin
Objective Provide the steps/process to developing a Simulation Program.
Introduction The response to an Obstetric Emergency is only effective as the team responding to it. A good team is competent, displays effective communication and understands their role in the emergency. A simulation program can improve competency, communication and team effectiveness, but most importantly patient outcomes .
Objective of Simulation To provide a safe environment in which mistakes do not result in patient harm, but instead provides an exciting learning opportunity. To analyze, evaluate and implement process improvements identified through simulation. Learning through simulation is the process of “putting it all together”, to understand it, to know it and to improve it!
Debrief The debriefing component is the crucial step that provides all participants the ability to explore, analyze, synthesize and clarify their actions and thought processes. This action will lead to an improvement in their performance in a real setting. This process is highly engaging and promotes a strong sense of professional responsibility and growth through learning. Simulation in obstetrics is vital to prepare staff for obstetric emergencies that are not common but require immediate recognition and action.
