I have had recent conversations with people where I have encouraged them to "proof check" their work carefully. Technical We are seeing many typos and missed words in their work. Review – Proof This is preventing them from achieving DTC and is also Checking frustrating clients. I am reassured again and again that they are proofreading their work, and I have no doubt that they are proofreading, but it is ineffective.
This has had me thinking that about how to clarify and educate on the difference between “proof reading” and “proof checking” and why one of these methods is good for reading a book at bedtime, while the other is necessary for your MT/HDS work. One Little We must remember that "one little letter" or "one little word" Letter or One can have an enormous impact on someone's life. Little Word Here are some examples that I have seen recently. I show these not to embarrass anyone, because we have all done it, but to highlight the importance of what I mean and how important it is to be accurate.
Examples • "Her mum works as a pubic servant" S/b: "Her mum works as a public servant" "Histology shows signs of cancer" S/b: "Histology shows no signs of cancer" "Her would has been cleaned and redressed" S/b: "Her wound has been cleaned and redressed" "She has casanova of the cervix" S/b: "She has carcinoma of the cervix" (Please think about your work as you type!)
No Laughing Matter • Now I will admit that a couple of these make me laugh out loud. • That is…until I sit back and think about the patient receiving their history…. • Or the dictator reading over our work and what they must think. • Then I get a little more serious.
PROOF CHECKING Proof This is retraining your brain to slow down and look at every single word, one at a time as you Checking read and understanding the context of what your report means. Over time, you can speed this process up.
PROOFREADING This is allowing your eyes to flow over a full word or sentence. Here is why this method does not work when trying to produce a quality file. "Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteers be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe." Proofreading You can read the words because the human mind reads words as a whole, and not letter- by-letter.
Proof Checking Skills • Proof checking is a skill, just like touch typing or researching quickly and effectively. • All are skills necessary to make you a successful MT, QA, mentor, group leader or wherever it is that your career may lead you.
Do As I Say, Not As I Do! • Words on a page – millions of them • The brain sees a word spelled right and thinks it is the right word • Read left to right, forward and backward, above and below • Think, think, think!~
Did You Know? • “They” say that the more fastidious you are about spelling in any communications (including texting and emails !!!!), the more easily you see mistakes in your MT/HDS work every day especially when it comes to editing! • Practice accuracy wherever you can and your mistakes will decrease!
