What is meant WPC? Shortcut WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) is the wood- plastic materials combine the functionality of wood flour and polymer matrix. The first products of this type were produced in 1919, by Rolls Royce. It was a shift knob in cars. Material was resin Bakelite and wood filler. Most currently used materials for the production of WPC are PP, HD-PE, PVC. Global trends of production: - US market and Asian based mainly on HD-PE - European market focuses on the production of PVC and PP
Comparing the basis of polymers available on the European market Properties Polipropylene (PP) Polietylene (HD-PE) Polyvinylchloride (PVC) General high chemical resistance small water absorption low water absorption properties better mechanical properties than high chemical resistance very high chemical the HD-PE high flexibility resistance low resistance to temperatures high impact resistance high mechanical strength below 0 ° C High mechanical strength very high flame class low resistance to weather low resistance to weather resistant to weathering and conditions, degraded by oxygen conditions UV contained in air Density 0,91 0,96 1,4 [g/cm3] The tensile 1300 - 1800 600-1400 2700-3000 modulus E [MPa] Fire reaction Efl - A very large part in fire Cfl - Limited but noticeable part in Bfl - Very limited participation in class fire fire Euroclasse product classification for reaction to fire indicates whether and how the product contributes to the development of the fire, ie. how fast it burns and how much energy at the same time produces. Reaction to fire tests. They are carried out on the basis of PN-EN 13501-1.
WPC is not only polymers Additives used in production WPC composites: Wood Fibre - it si contained in 45% of product. The wood fibers used in the manufacture comes from conifers tree and they are selected. The wood fibers are subjected to roughing operations. This procedure aims to increase the affinity of the fibers to the polymer UV stabilizers and antioxidants - prevent of degradation during sunlight treatment of product surface. Pigments - They are very important because they care about the protection of the color of the product. Thermo stabilizers for PVC based on Zn-Ca particles not Pb.
Why additives are so important
Disadvantages of WPC profiles Cracking surface of the boards and collapse due to lack of adequate protection from UV radiation. Figure 1. Free radicals effect. Collapses in boards. Source – internet. The use of low-quality plastics additives cause acceleration of degradation of the product. In the pictures are visible signs of fungal infections that results from the use of poor quality wood fiber (Figure 2) and cheap pigments effect (Figure 3). Figure 3. Source – internet. Figure 2. Disadvantages of WPC profiles In the case of products made in co-extrusion technology problem is the combination of two different materials in a single product. Often this manifests itself cracks on their border. Figure 4. Co-extrusion product with cracking between two layers of mterial. Source – own research. Boards produced in co-extrusion technology, after scratching the surface, reveal the inner layer with worse properties. Boards which have pigment throught whole cross-section of the product is better because after a few years you can make refresh the terrace by brushing. Figure 5. Co-extrusion board with scratching.
