WHAT IS A HND IN APPLIED SCIENCE? • Pearson HNDs are designed to help students with a L3 background learn and develop new skills required to succeed in employment or higher education (university). • 2 year programme, 2.5 days per week (9am-5pm) • They are a level 5 qualification equivalent to the first 2 years of a university undergraduate degree or a foundation degree programme. • Assessment takes place in the form of assignments, powerpoint presentations and posters. • You can progress to work as a Science Technician, Research/Lab Technician, Medical Lab Assistant, Quality Support Technician, Manufacturing Technician etc. or you could progress onto a top up degree programme- onto Year 2 or 3.

YEAR 1: -Fundamentals of Laboratory techniques -Cell Biology -Fundamentals of Chemistry -Fundamentals of Biochemistry -Anatomy and Human Physiology -Scientific Data Handling Approaches and Techniques -Regulation and Quality in Applied Science -Microbiological Techniques YEAR 2: -Analysis of Scientific Data and Information -Infectious Diseases and Diagnosis -Immunology -Epidemiology of Communicable Diseases -Scientific Laboratory Management -Project for Applied Science -Molecular Biology and Genetics -Biochemistry of Macromolecules and Metabolic Pathways

REASONS FOR STUDYING A HND… • You can stay on at college, you already know the lecturers and the campus! • Cheaper option, as it costs £5,000 per year so £10,000 for 2 years as opposed to a uni degree which is currently £9,250 per year (£18,500 for 2 years). You are saving £8,500! • Less exams than uni ☺ • The course can lead to Year 2 or 3 of degrees in Medical Physiology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Science, Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Food Science, Life Sciences, Biology, Human Biology, Biological Science, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Forensic Science, etc. • The college has links with specific universities that will allow you transfer if you achieve Pass, Merits or Distinctions. • Examples of uni’s that take HND students: UEL, Greenwich, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, LSBU, London Met, Bradford, Wolverhampton, University of Stirling, Glasgow Caledonian etc. • As a top-up degree graduate you can work, go onto do Masters degrees or Graduate Entry Medicine/Dentistry (4 years instead of 5 years) or other conversion courses such as Psychology, GDL (Law), Pre-reg courses (Allied Healthcare)

DESTINATION OF PREVIOUS STUDENTS • Past students have gone onto many different fields: • Sadia (2017) went onto do Biomed at Greenwich University, she was employed by Glaxo Smith Kline as a Pharmaceutical Sales Rep whilst she did her Masters at UCL and is currently on her 3 rd year of Medicine degree at Edinburgh University. • Mahnoor (2017) went to Greenwich Uni (Biomed) and is currently working as a Health Care Assistant. • Marta (2017) went to UEL, is currently on placement at Barts NHS trust and will be a Registered Biomedical Scientist-ready to start work in September 2020. • Shegofeta went to UEL (Biomed) and is due to start MSc at Imperial College, followed by Graduate Entry Medicine. • Rejaul (2018) went to UEL (Biomed) and is now a qualified PGCE graduate – due to start teaching Science in September 2020! • Maham (2019) went to UEL (Biomed) and is now seeking employment for NHS. • Ijaz (2019) and Hamad went to UEL (Biomed).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & FUNDING ENTRY REQUIREMENTS • GCSEs grades A* to C and/or 9 to 4 or equivalent OR • Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English may be considered • 16-24 UCAS points from AS and A-levels OR • Level 3 qualification in related subjects OR • Access to HE Diploma • Mature students (over 21) who do not meet this criteria, with relevant work or life experience will also be considered. • Non-native English speakers or those who have not studied English in their final 2 years of school must take college assessment in English and Maths. • Applicants are exected to attend an interview FUNDING • Apply through Student Finance England (student loans) • You will be means tested and advised what you are entitled to whether: Tuition Fee Loan or/and Maintenance Loan.
