  1. National Workshop On Wastewater Recycling and Presentation of Urban Water Awards 2011-12 Topic: Industry Prospective on use of Recycles wastewater March 7, 2014

  2. Overview of Presentation Water : Indian Scenario Wastewater Recycle and Reuse Opportunities Success Stories – Industry CII TWI Vision & Purpose 26/03/2014 2

  3. 1 Water: Indian Scenario

  4. Water Scenario-India Would the next world war would be over water ? ► Establishment of UMPPs will further strain the thin Surface Water-Polluted Ground Water-Depleted water resources Rainfall - Wasted ► Indian industries consumed about Industry -Growing Water 50 billion cubic meters of water Water Reqd- Increasing Scarcity- Water Recycle- ? ? ? Is a Crisis looming ahead? ► Large population of people lack Population – Increasing access to safe water Demand – Increasing Consumption-Increasing ► Fresh water available per capita Quality of water- Poor per annum in India has dropped Health Issue- Increasing from 5,200 m 3 to 1,820 m 3 in 01 India’s water future - ??? According to WHO, mortality is high due to water borne diseases 26/03/2014 4

  5. India is water stressed measured both in terms of quantity and quality  Most of the country receives nearly all its rainfall in less than about 1% of the time of an entire year.  More than 80 percent of river basins are facing stress and scarcity  Groundwater depletion and deterioration  depleting at a rate far greater than what natural cycles can replenish (even > 1 m/ year) 09/10/2013 5

  6. India is water stressed measured both in terms of quantity and quality  Groundwater quality fast deteriorating  emerging geo-contaminants  non-point source pollutants like nitrates  Less than 1/3 rd of our total sewage gets treated  About 50% of riverine length shows high pollution measured in terms of BOD alone  Over 20% of transmissible diseases in India are related to unsafe water 09/10/2013 6

  7. As a result ! Per capita water availability (m 3 /capita) 6000 5000 Water stress line (1700) 4000 Water scarcity line (1000) 3000 2000 1000 Water Availability (cum) 0 1951 1961 1971 1981 1991 2001 2011 2025 2050 Per capita available water resource Per capita utilizable water resource (GW and SW) Regions face growing demand-supply gaps. Climatic variability is an add-on stressor. Conflicting demands over a shrinking resource 7

  9. Wastewater generation from different types of industries and achievable reuse Industry Average volume of 120 wastewater per unit 98 or product 100 80 3 L/h/MW Thermal power 155 x 10 plant 60 50 3 L/tonne Pulp & paper 250 x 10 40 40 40 25 3 L/tonne Iron & Steel 150x 10 15 20 12 3 L/Kg Pharmaceutical 4.5x 10 0 Distillery 15 L/L of alcohol Textile 250 L/Kg Cloth Tannery 34 L/Kg of raw hides Per Cent reuse achievable

  10. Wastewater Treatment : Present Scenario  Industrial  13000 MLD generated by 1,35,000 polluting industries  60% is treated (large & medium industries)  Domestic  23000 MLD generated (300 Class I Cities and 345 Class II towns)  Only 6000 MLD is treated Source: CPCB 26/03/2014 10

  11. 2 Wastewater Recycle & Reuse Opportunities

  12. Recycle & Reuse opportunities Use of sewage & effluent water for low and high end applications Use of sewage & effluent water for high end applications Reuse of treated water as water curtain, floor washings, dual pipe line for toilet flushing etc.  High End Application  Cooling Water Make-up  Boiler Feed  Process Water  Low End Application  Gardening  Floor Washing  Toilet Flushing

  13. Looking for alternative sources Additional RO Reject Treatment? Well Water RO Surface Permeate Water Treated Water Boiler Blow Municipal Down Water Internal ZLD WW Distillate Reuse MBR Municipal Effluent Treated WW Can use many sources of lower quality water * * With proper system design and treatment 26/03/2014 13

  14. Recycling Initiatives of Indian Industry  Segregates waste streams at source and perform primary/ secondary treatment, locally as appropriate  TDS and Organic Load  Color  Reuse of treated water locally as far as possible  Cost Effective  Reduce of fresh water intake  Installed common tertiary treatment plant for further treatment and reuse 26/03/2014 14

  15. Full range of technologies for primary, secondary and advanced wastewter treatment & reuse Water Sedimentation Screening/ Biological Clarification Filtration RO Disinfection Path Grit Removal Clarification Others Residuals Management Sludge Thickening / Digestion / Instrumentation Dewatering Odor Control Path Solids Reduction & Control 26/03/2014 15

  16. Success Stories 3

  17. Case Study-I  Conservation of Ground Water  Reuse of 220m 3 /day of Secondary Treated Wastewater  Installed full fledged tertiary treated water system using submerged UF-RO membrane  Utilized for non-potable purposes  Fresh water savings of 73000m 3 /year 26/03/2014 17

  18. Zero Water Discharge  Effluent Generation of ~ 800m 3 /day  Process • Component Washing • Paint Booth  Utilities • Cooling Tower • Filter Backwash  Sewage  Percentage of Treated Effluent in Daily Consumption  35% in Process  Rest Green Belt Development 26/03/2014 18

  19. CII-TWI and USAID India partnership  Objective To Promote Water Use Efficiency across Urban Sector to Address Climate Change  Activities undertaken  Water audits in Industry, buildings /hospitals  Pre-feasibility studies for utilizing municipal sewage  Identification of doable projects on reuse of sewage  Information Dissemination and Capacity Building Programs 09/10/2013 19

  20. CII-TWI USAID Enhances Ecosystems model Project activities are linked to a larger goal WATER AUDITS APPROACHES (Industry and buildings) CLIMATE CHANGE Good Case Studies on Reduce, Reuse & Recycle SEWAGE REUSABILITY Focus Area: Urban Sector ECOSYSTEM SECURITY IMPACT ON WATER RESOURCE Demand & Supply side management Minimizing Impact - Demand Management SUSTAINABLE WATER MINIMIZE IMPACT - Scale up to other Cities RESOURCE 20
