Alimos is located in the southern sector of Athens basin in Attica, Greece. It is a modern seaside suburb, on the coast of the Saronic Gulf, with rich history and archaeological findings from the 23rd century BC. It is only 8 km away from the center of Athens, with the view of Acropolis from the hills and tallest buildings. It is located along the large coastal Poseidonos Avenue, following a Alimos marina coastline with short and long bays and wonderful sandy beaches.
At the coast of Alimos there is the largest marina in Greece. At its borders, there is the former Hellinikon International Airport, which is planned to be transformed into a Metropolitan Park, project of international scope, in an area of 2.000.000 sq.m. in total. The Project constitutes the largest urban regeneration project in Europe, designed to add significant new investments and use in the areas of tourism, culture, entrepreneurship, innovation and the environment. Thus, it is expected to have a positive effect not only on the region of Attica but on the entire country as well.
In Alimos was born the greatest historian of all time, Thucydides. He was born in Alimos in 460 BC and died between 399 and 396. With his history of the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC), he bequeathed to the World Secretariat the model of historical writing, as a result of a survey, objective recording and meaningful interpretation of events, Panoramic view of archeological site of Alimos at the same time demonstrating to the people the way to be guided by the events and actions of the past and come to conclusions regarding the future.

The events, all year round, embrace artistic expression, from traditional to the most modern, with young people at the heart of every effort. There are many cultural associations that are very active. The Municipality is also a leader in the cultural sector. It supports cultural institutions, operates a multipurpose cultural center and a library, has a winter and 3 summer theaters and organizes a series of events, in view that Culture must be provided to all but also be produced by everyone, particularly young people, who need opportunities and stimuli for creative employment. The aim of the municipal authority is to create a Municipal Art Gallery in Alimos with paintings of well-known artists.
According to the 1961 census, Alimos had 13,000 residents, in the early 1970s, more than double, 27,000 residents and now nearly 50,000. The short distance from the center of Athens, its accessibility by road, the sea and recreational opportunities in the coastal zone, as well as the high quality of living in most areas are the main reasons for attracting new residents to Alimos. The growth of the population has created the need to provide more and more complete services, which in turn resulted in new growth of the population, but also altered the financial profile of Alimos.
The Municipality of Alimos has been increasingly active over the last years in more and more sectors, in the interest of its citizens and in terms of the needs of the community. Today's municipal authority believes that, besides the usual current obligations concerning cleaning services, environmental protection and granting certificates, Local Government should play an active and essential role in the economic, social and cultural life of citizens.
In addition, it must encourage citizens to participate in democratic processes and at local, national and Union level. For this reason, it seeks to participate in European programs and networks of cities, aiming at the establishment of a continuous dialogue between local and public institutions. The “Old Town, New Results” program aims at improving the critical thinking skills and active citizenship, especially among young Ancient theater of Euonymos (500 BC), Alimos people, by learning more about the European Union institutions and the decision-making process.
