Moving Forw rward Together
Purpose and Orientation “One of the most significant and formative experiences in the life of a parish community is the process of building a church.” SGA Workshop April 13, 2013
The Challenge Without knowledge of the reality of what one participates in, the participation cannot be as full, conscious, or fruitful as it should.

Lead Souls to God and Their Eternal Salvation Collection of Materials Exodus 25: 1-3:8 The LORD spoke to Moses: Speak to the Israelites: Let them receive contributions that their hearts prompt them to give me. These are the contributions you shall accept from them: gold, silver, and bronze; They are to make a sanctuary for me, that I may dwell in their midst.
Lead Souls to God and Their Eternal Salvation Practical and Technical Knowledge is Not Enough Built Of Living Stones tells us: “To be able to make specific recommendations about the building project, parish members need to understand the nature of the liturgy, the space it requires, and the ways in which the physical building can help or hinder worship” Built Of Living Stones warns us: “The fabric of the assembly may fray and even tear if we are not in union with God’s will”
Lead Souls to God and Their Eternal Salvation Personal Practice 1) Die to Self 2) Prayer and open our hearts to the Holy Spirit 3) Believe in the Paschal Mystery that Christ will continue to guide us, as he did on earth, through the Eucharist. 4) Know your faith first so your contributions are valid and not based on emotion and presuppositions. 5) We need to begin with theology and then create the aesthetic. Art and architecture are a part of the rite, not merely a neutral setting. 6) Sacramental signs make present and active the very reality they signify, and a sacramental building composed of sacramental signs does that. 7) We are to mediate heaven on earth, that enthuses (in God) those who attend, during their spiritual journey to eternity with God. 8) Through Collective Wisdom
Return to Paradise

Initial Thoughts – Design Cues Historical - Byzantine Constantine the Great, the first Christian Emperor of Rome (A.D. 306-337), founded Constantinople, as a new capital of the Empire, on the site of the Greek city of Byzantium. This historical event was, later, in a great measure, responsible for (1) the division of European architecture into Romanesque and Byzantine, (2) the formation of two Churches, the Roman and Greek, and (3) the division of the Empire into the Western and Eastern Empires. Byzantine architecture maybe said to be Roman architecture (1) influenced by Asiatic feeling, (2) stimulated by the new faith of Christianity, and (3) modified by Greek thought which still prevailed, when Byzantine architecture was taking shape, in the Eastern Empire. Buildings in this style are characterized by, the round arch, the circle, and, above all, by the use of the dome. The chief glory, Much of Byzantine architecture was created to internally, of typical churches in express religious experience and mediate this style is the wonderful display between the believer and God. of precious marbles and mosaics.
