• Late 2011 - The Mid West Industry Road Safety Alliance (MWIRSA) was formed • September 2012 - Officially launched by the Minister for Road Safety Liza Harvey MLA
• Modelled on existing two Industry Road Safety Alliances in the state – South West and Pilbara regions • Has developed into a truly Mid West Arrangement, to specifically address the issues important to Geraldton and the surrounding region.
• The Alliance brings together main industry bodies, local and relevant state government agencies that have a responsibility in road safety • Role – to facilitate a regional response to the State Road Safety Strategy Towards Zero (2008-2020) • Share knowledge and resources to improve road safety in the Mid West region for all road users

The Issue • Highest priority issue for the Mid West is the interaction between trucks and light vehicles • In the five years to 31 Dec 2012, a total of 2880 crashes occurred on Mid West roads, of which 322 (11%) involved with heavy vehicles • In the same period 40 fatalities occurred, of which 10 involved interactions with trucks – 25%!
• ‘Tame the Beast’ road safety educational campaign developed by MWIRSA educating the safe overtaking of heavy vehicles on single lane roads • Two campaigns - The Backseat Driver - Dave the Truckie • Campaign ran for four weeks on GWN and Orana Cinemas in Geraldton – 2013 & 2014 during peak holiday periods

Other MWIRSA ‘WINS’ • Advocate for State government funding to replace the Greenough Bridge (2012) Road Safety Campaigns • We Want You to Be Everlasting - Email blast – sent to over 160 contacts ranging from roadhouses, tourist information centres, regional tourism organisations, campervan and 4WD associations - Facebook – 428 people reached and 37 shares
Fit for the Trip Campaign • New Fatigue Campaign – 45 seconds and 15 seconds bookend • Launch date – Thursday 25 September at Orana Cinema, Geraldton • Cost of production = $22,000 • Filmed outside of Dongara, Mid West
