Background • In 2018, Chaffee Count y passed a local ordinance t o increase sales t ax by 0.25 percent , which is est imat ed t o generat e $1.16M per year. • The Count y Commissioners are planning t o disseminat e a request for applicat ions (RF A) t o det ermine how t hey will spend t he generat ed revenue, reinvest ing it in communit y proj ect s and local agencies. “ Teamwork Makes t he Dream Work: Part nering t o Assess Environment al Healt h and Plan for t he Fut ure”
Background • Chaffee Count y Public Healt h Depart ment (CCPHD) request ed t echnical assist ance from t he Colorado Depart ment of Public Healt h and Environment (CDPHE). • CO Tracking program was asked t o help in t he environment al healt h assessment process. “ Teamwork Makes t he Dream Work: Part nering t o Assess Environment al Healt h and Plan for t he Fut ure”
Methods • Guided by t he Prot ocol for Assessing • Communit y Excellence in Environment al Healt h (P ACE EH) process, we developed a condensed process t o fulfill local needs. • The P ACE EH process is designed t o be it erat ive, revisit ing st eps as needed t hrough t he process. • CDPHE EPHT t eam members facilit at ed t he four meet ings, which enabled CCPHD personnel t o part icipat e in t he sessions as communit y st akeholders and part ners. “ Teamwork Makes t he Dream Work: Part nering t o Assess Environment al Healt h and Plan for t he Fut ure”
Methods • The P ACE EH met hodology ent ails 13 st eps t o answer t he necessary quest ions in det ermining communit y priorit ies for act ion: 1. Determine community capacity to undertake the assessment 2. Define and characterize the community 3. Assemble community environmental health assessment team 4. Define the goals of the assessment 5. Generate the environmental health issue list 6. Analyze issues with a systems framework 7. Develop appropriate community environmental health indicators 8. Select standards 9. Create environmental health issue profiles 10. Rank the environmental health issues 11. Set priorities for action 12. Develop an action plan 13. Preliminary R esults • After 4 meetings, the group settled on a set of three priorities: • Air qualit y • S urface wat er qualit y • Wast e management • S urface wat er qualit y and wast e management were ranked slight ly higher t han air qualit y by group members. “ Teamwork Makes t he Dream Work: Part nering t o Assess Environment al Healt h and Plan for t he Fut ure”
