UVA IDEA Fund IDEA Fund established 2010 as an initiative of the Office of Diversity and Equity and submitted to the President’s Office as a diversity and equity goal. IDEA Fund Trustees are committed and diverse alumni sharing their Time and Capital in support of Inclusion , Diversity , Equity and Access at UVA. IDEA Fund partners with UVA institutions to drive innovative programs that make the UVA experience inclusive and equitable to all of its community members. Our goal is to be an alumni sounding board for IDEA issues as the University enters its 3 rd Century. 3

How We Work Action-oriented alumni leadership advocating for Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access at UVA and in its communities Provide an Alumni perspective – supportive, reflective, and long-term focus Actions provide measurable impact on students, faculty, and staff Primary partnership with The Office of the Vice President and Chief Officer for Diversity and Equity (ODE) which provides context, continuity, and connections Administrative support from UVA Alumni Association 6
Our Primary Activities ✓ Multi-year Big IDEAs partnering with key departments and institutions to bring innovative IDEAs to the University ✓ Annual Endorsed Award to UVA departments and institutions ✓ Semester-based Mini-Grants to student organizations ✓ Issue-specific Advocacy ✓ Virtual and in-person forums for dialogue with and input from students and faculty interested in promoting IDEA at UVA 7
Big IDEAs • 2017-2019 Career Externship Pilot – 3 year partnership with Career • Venture capital approach Services to develop externships for low income, first generation, and transfer students funded by • Incubate IDEA programs IDEA Fund up to $150,000 with University partners • Provide seed funding for • 2014-2016 Early ID Pilot – 3 year innovative pilots promoting IDEA with the goal of effort to work with Admissions to programmatic adoption and create a viable method of middle funding by UVA school tracking of potential UVA applicants and families from • Minimum of 2-year horizon diverse backgrounds • Funding to date has ranged from $10,000 to $150,000 • 2012-2013 Slavery Report – (see attached case study) Partnered with ODE to compile activities at UVA and surrounding community leading to formation of PCSU and continuing engagement in PCSU 8

Lessons on Diverse Alumni Engagement Diverse Alumni will engage in Advancement but need: Clarity --- a clear articulation of challenges being faced by UVA in achieving Inclusion and Diversity at all levels of the institution Relevance --- a demonstration of willingness to find breakthrough solutions by directly engaging Diverse Alumni and outside experts and showing a willingness to experiment Outcomes --- an understanding that Diverse Alumni affinity and support of UVA is highly correlated with IDEA solutions that impact alum’s success outside of UVA 11
Consideration by Advancement Committee What role for IDEA Fund and its mission in UVA’s Third Century Campaign? Continue working with the Office of Diversity and Equity to be a forum for the input of cross-section of Diverse Alumni on IDEA issues at UVA Vehicle for soliciting Diverse Alumni input for UVA’s innovations around IDEA Consider how to institutionalize funding mechanism of Big IDEAs output as part of the work of the Advancement Committee – from venture capital based validation into programmatic support 12
