The Origins 2010 : DISCOVERY & STUDIES 1) We We engaged engaged a m massiv assive e replantion replantion program program Beaujolai Beaujolais s in 2010 at domaine Henry Fessy 2) The Domaine Latour team was was at at the the head head of of this this reflexion reflexion on Beaujolais terroir and viticulture, that brings us to explore th explore the e territory territory and have and have many many discussion discussions s with with growers growers, brockers, and experts 3) We understood that the south south of of B Beaujolai eaujolais s is is a t terroi erroir r closer closer to to Burgundy than to the typical granite soil of the Beaujolais area Burgundy 4) It is challenging for the growers in the area to to create create lo long ng term term val value ue with with their their vineyards vineyards. 5) We’ve seen some initiative with Chardonnay but the innovation innovation was was to to be be the the first first to to pl plant ant Pi Pinot not Noir Noir
Pierres Dorées Area 2010 : DISCOVERY & STUDIES 1) The Pierres Dorées region is located at the gates of Lyon and is also called “th “the Little Tusca e Tuscany”. As Louis-Fabrice Latour often says, “on one of e of t the e most ost b bea eaut utiful ul regi gions ns in n Franc ance ”. 2) The architecture and the landscape reminisces Italy: vine neyar ards ds, hi hills, and and 39 little e villages es si sitting on on thei eir top ops, where houses and castles built from ochre stones, bear a won wonder erful ul gol olden en col color or. 3) 3) Th The p e parcel cels s that Maison son Loui ouis s Latour our has s sel select ected ed for orm t two b wo block ocks s which are situated in the villages of Morancé and Theizé. 4) Most of the Mo Moranc ancé village is built with the famous golden stones and white stones from Lucenay. Founded at the beginning of the 13th century. Pierres Dorées “Terroir” 2010 : DISCOVERY & STUDIES 1) In this area the crino noidal dal limest eston one (marine f e fossi ossils s from the family of starfishes) are tinted by iron on oxi oxide e 2) 2) Th This s Iron on oxi oxide e gives its characteristic yel ellow och ow ochre e col colour our to to the e st ston one of e of the a e area ea : Les Pierres Dorées (Golden Stones) 3) Les Pierres Dorées provide wonderful cl clay-limest eston one soi e soils. 4) The parcels that Maison Louis Latour has selected form two blocks which are situated in the villages of Mo Moranc ancé and and Thei Th eizé. 5) The impressi essive e qua uantity of of m marine e fossi ossils s content in the soils led to the creation of a geologic museum near our parcels 6) One of our plots carries the name of “Cl Clos os des es Pier erres es Fol olles es” ” (cr crazy st ston ones es viney eyard)
Pierres Dorées Climate 2010 : DISCOVERY & STUDIES 1) The climate here is a con continen ental t tem emper erate e cl climate e influenced by both the mountains and the Mediterranean sea, 2) This climate allows our parcels to benefit from slightly warmer days than Côte d’Or with nice cool cool t tem emper eratur ures es at at ni night ght 3) We have a good ood sun sun exp exposur osure e on our selected plots thanks to a v variet ety of of ex exposi osition ons, s, from ful ull Ea East st t to o ful ull West est ! ! 4) This climate is p s per erfect ect for this elegant gant and de and delicat ate grape variety. 5) High temperatures could cause over-ripeness of the grapes, that’s why the he vine neyar ard d ar are pl plant anted d at at be between n 280 0 and and 400 m 00 meters hi high gh
The Origins 2012 : FIRST PARCELS BOUGHT 1) In 2012, Maison Louis Latour started to buy uy land and in n the he Pi Pierres Dor orées A ées Area ea 2) We started to buy mostly unpl nplant anted plot ots or s or plot ots s with th ol old vines es that needed to be replanted. 3) We were also very fortunate to fi find an an ol old parcel cel of of Pinot ot Noi oir, planted in 1970 on a ridge, this vineyards proudly overlooks the area from its perchet position of 400 00 met etres es. 4) We understood at this time that ot other er vine e grower owers in the area were interested by the project and wanted to work with us to develop a Pi Pino not Noir pl plant antat ation n
Find & Buy 2012 : FIRST PARCELS BOUGHT 1) The year 2012 was an inten ense p se per eriod od of of resea esearch ch for or plots matching our diffe ffere rent cr criter erias 2) We wanted to find parcels with the type of cl clay and limest eston one e soils that we needed and an exp exposi osition on com compatible e with great quality Pinot Noir 3) We wanted plots with slope pes and at and at al altitude de presenting a great po potent ntial al to grow Pinot Noir with the slow but sure increase of the temperature 4) 4) Land Land was as av avai ailabl able because of the difficulties of the local growers to value their work. 5) We also wanted to build good ood si sized ed block ocks s of of v viney eyards s and avoi oid the e disp sper ersi sion on of of our our vines ov es over er a a too l oo large e area ea. This is practical reason for the future management of the vineyards
The Origins 2012-2014 : UPROOTING AND REPLANTING 1) Converting has been possible thanks to the new Cot Cotea eaux ux Bour ourgui uignon ons appe appellat ation. 2) This exp exper erimen ental r reg egul ulation on allowed us to plant 15% Pinot Noir on the Domaine in Beaujolais, our our g grea eat do domai aine ne of 80 hectares makes us able to rea ealize e the p e proj oject ect. 3) The qu qual ality o of t the he pl plant antat ations ns determines the future success of the project 4) The bi bigge ggest pl plant antat ation pr n progr gram am launched at Maison Louis Latour since Valmoissine in the 80’s 5) Replanting is an ext extrem emel ely exp expen ensi sive e and long ng las asting ng process
