Heland aimed at promoting socio-economic sustainable development through innovative technological actions for Mediterranean tourism-heritage and landscape protection clusters. This was carried out through: through: The establishment of a common approach for sustainable tourism through the set of meaningful sustainable indicators in all partner countries.
Involvement of all social stakeholders in the process since Heland aims at responding to new demands, not only of the tourists but also of the local stakeholders. SWMED Ministry for Energy and Health Budget: €124,153.27 Ministry for Gozo Budget:€109,463.42 Project end date: 28 February 2015
The aim of SWMED was to promote, in each of the participating countries, including Malta, polices aimed at satisfying water and sanitation needs of the aimed at satisfying water and sanitation needs of the population, whilst reducing water abstraction and improving the quality of water bodies receiving wastewater.
Maltese partners were involved in disseminating water saving kits in each Gozitan household (as a pilot study). Each locality had a different type of kit. Afterwards, these households were asked to give feedback on the use of these kits and according to their replies, results were issued. Such results, together with other partners’ results, served to draft solutions on the water saving methods used and needed for every different type of household in the different partner countries involved in the project.
Med-Jellyrisk University of Malta Budget: €281,124.00 Project end date: 17 December 2015 Project end date: 17 December 2015 MED-JELLYRISK was the first-ever international attempt to assess the socio-economic impacts of jellyfish blooms and implement mitigation counter- measures.
An anti-jellyfish net was installed in Pretty Bay, B’Bugia. In addition a Med-jelly mobile app was launched. Its main objective is to provide clear and accurate Its main objective is to provide clear and accurate real-time information about jellyfish: e.g. if there are jellyfish on the beach, which species are present, which species exist, what to do if you get stung by a jellyfish, and all the relevant information about this topic.
Staff at the Physical Oceanography Research Group within the Department of Geosciences at the University of Malta, have launched a jellyfish dispersion model through which users can track the forecasted pathway, for the next four (4) the forecasted pathway, for the next four (4) days, of a jellyfish bloom they observe in the waters around the Maltese Islands. This petition is envisaged to be presented to MEPA in 2016
Scow Local Councils’ Association Budget: €377,148.60 Project end date: 31 December 2015 The aim of SCOW was to develop low cost, technically simple and high quality biowaste collection and recycling models in territories with touristic areas and agricultural activity.
In Malta, waste for this pilot study will be provided from hotels, schools and vegetable processing plants, which will then be transferred to a compost plant, where compost will be generated. In addition, a number of ‘mini composters’ which shall be distributed to various entities in Malta shall be distributed to various entities in Malta (schools, local councils, etc) were purchased under the project, whereby such entities can generate their own compost and use it in public gardens, school premises, etc.

The aim of the MEDALGAE project was to enhance regional and cross border collaboration for the regional and cross border collaboration for the development of a new generation of biofuels from microalgae.

MIEMA took part in the following main activities: • Setting up and organisation of local stakeholders committee • Similarly, the organisation of local steering committee meetings • Identification of potential sites for the production of bio- fuel from micro-algae based on the location of resources for algae growth and potential co-product customers • Pre-feasibility study for the implementation of a large- scale algae-to-biofuel plants
Joussour Public Broadcasting Services Budget: €84,871.99 Project end date: 31 December 2013 Its aim was to support the cooperation in the audiovisual and media sector through the shared realization of products for the Television and the Internet, intended to inform the general public of the Mediterranean area about the environmental challenges in Mediterranean coastal regions.
