  5. What is an Endorsement? • Area of concentration or focus • Think about: ▫ What you enjoy ▫ Your strengths and weaknesses ▫ Your interests • Endorsements can be changed at any time

  7. Distinguished Level of Achievement Must successfully complete: • 4 credits in mathematics (must have Algebra 2) • 4 credits in science • Remaining curriculum requirements • 1 endorsement Must earn Distinguished Level of Achievement to be eligible for top 10% automatic admission

Performance Acknowledgements Earned by outstanding performance : • in dual credit course work (12 hours) • Associate degree while in high school • in bilingualism and biliteracy • on an AP test or IB exam • on the PSAT, The ACT-Plan, the SAT, or the ACT Also by: • Earning a nationally or internationally recognized business or industry certification or license

Course Levels Refer to “Advanced Academics” tab Advanced Academics • PreAP/IB (prep for future AP/IB courses) • GT/Phoenix (must be GT identified) • AP (Advanced Placement – must take AP exam in May) • IB (International Baccalaureate – must take IB exam in May) • Dual Credit - earn high school credit and college credit concurrently. Advanced Academics • Consider your strengths and interests when choosing your classes • Consult with your current teachers or parents for advice concerning “how many” or “ which ones” are right for you • Take into consideration your extra curricular commitments since advanced classes require an advanced work load • Challenge yourself, but don’t overload yourself • Set yourself up for success, not STRESS!!!

Spanish for Native Speakers • Offers native Spanish speakers the option to accelerate through 4 levels of Spanish in 2 years. • 9 th grade: Spanish 1 & 2 (both Pre-AP/IB) • 10 th grade: Spanish 3 (Pre-AP/IB) & 4 (AP- plus exam) • If you have already taken Spanish 1 in 8 th grade: ▫ Take Pre-AP/IB Spanish 2 in 9 th grade ▫ Consider Native Speakers Spanish 3-4 for 10 th grade • Contact Michele Salas (Michele.Salas@allenisd.org) for more information.

AP Human Geography (HGAP) • Study of how people interact with the environment • Not a history course • College course– requires 30-45 minutes of homework each night • Lots of critical reading, writing, and analysis • Students are expected to take the AP exam in May ($96) • Passing score on the AP exam yields college credit; must pass HGAP course to earn high-school credit.

Choosing Courses • Select courses wisely • Access the Academic Planning Guide (APG) as well as your parents, teachers, & counselors • The courses you select NOW will be the ONLY classes you will be able to use in building your schedule in Arena Scheduling later. Make sure you choose all courses you would want to use in building your schedule. If you do not select courses, counselors will select them for you based on your graduation needs and class availability !

  16. Course Selection Sheet • Do not sign up for courses that you have taken this year that count for high school credit: • Algebra 1 • Spanish1 • French 1 • BIM • Principles of Hospitality • Electives – (.5 cr or 1 cr)

  18. Am I required to choose alternate classes? YES! Keep in mind • You should choose 4 alternates each semester • Some classes are only offered ONE period • There may be schedule conflicts • Classes fill up • Prerequisite courses may be required • Application/Tryout may be required

  19. Course requests • Course requests do not guarantee your spot in that course • Elective courses are subject to availability

  20. PE OPEN ENROLLMENT • Aerobic Activities • Cardio/Weight Training • Intramural Sports (PE) • Intramural Swimming • Intramural Tennis • Outdoor Adventures 1 • JROTC Note: Band, Color Guard, Tallenettes receive a PE credit for the fall semester

Athletics OPEN ENROLLMENT Choose a full year of the course as you make selections! • Baseball • Swimming • Diving • Track • Girls Basketball • Volleyball • Softball • Wrestling • Soccer • Football Placement in off season course is contingent upon screening by coach the first 10 days of school. Athletic Physical must be on file

  25. Naviance- Applications ● After choosing the “apply course” in skyward you will need to complete the application process in Naviance ● Applications are located in Naviance ○ “Links”section ■ left side of the home screen ○ Click on “Course Applications” APPLICATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 12

  26. Application/Tryout Course Information in Naviance 8 th grade students can access Naviance through their middle school web-site. Log into Naviance using student account

  27. Go to the home page in Naviance and choose course applications under “links”. Locate application and submit by January 12, 2018

Reminders About Course Requests ● Course Request forms need to be returned as follows: -Ford MS: Dec. 21 (math teacher) -Curtis MS: Jan. 12 (science teacher) -Ereckson MS: Jan. 12 (science teacher) ● If you do not select a class during the course selections window, you will NOT be able to schedule it during Arena Scheduling. ● If you do not select enough course requests the counselors will select classes for you based on course availability and graduation needs. MAKE YOUR COURSE SELECTION DECISIONS CAREFULLY

Schedule Change Procedures Make an informed choice now… • Schedules will be available on Skyward upon completion of Arena scheduling. • Review schedule carefully at that time • Any change request MUST be made BEFORE 4:00 pm on Friday, May 18, 2018. • This includes request to move to or from advanced courses • After school begins, requests to drop from an advanced class to an on-level class will only be allowed after the first six weeks of school if approved.
