Innovating the build-up:
We can start our sentences with fronted adverbials:
A fronted adverbial describes… • When • How long • How • Where • Or how often … something happens!
The wizard helps out: Delicately, she waved her thin, oak wand… Carefully, the mysterious wizard cast a spell upon the potatoes… Fronted adverbials! With a swish, the lady in the amethyst dress cast her spell…
The potatoes have been contaminated with garlic puree! Vampires hate garlic. Just the sight of it makes them scared for their lives! So how would they react after eating a garlic puree-flavoured potato? Discuss!
What are the symptoms of food poisoning? Have you ever eaten something that has made you ill? Maybe it was rotten, or wasn’t cooked properly?
The vampires are poisoned! How might they physically react to the garlic puree? They clutched their stomachs… The beasts recoiled in pain… Overcome with malaise, the vampires started to disintegrate… As the poison coursed through their veins, the monsters began to…
With the vampires gone, the wizard returns to the queen for her payment: What time did she return? Does it have to be an actual time? At 8pm? As daylight broke? As the rooster crowed? After a while? At daybreak? Before long?
Without the keys, the wizard leaves town: How might you feel if someone broke their promise to you? A little bit upset? Disappointed? Betrayed? Filled with revenge? Choose your words carefully to show how she might feel!
Friday 13 th November 2020 LO: To write the problem to an innovated warning story
Innovating the problem:
The wizard returns for the keys: When / how did she return? Eventually? A few hours later? In a fit of anger? Later that afternoon? Filled with hope?
She gives the queen one final chance: How might you write this? She demanded the keys from the town’s ruler… The wizard made one last request to the queen… She stared forcefully at the queen, and asked firmly for the keys – a prize she rightly deserved…
Oh no! The queen refuses to give her the keys! The queen… …laughed in the wizard’s face …refused her request …turned the wizard down …denied her the keys …declined to give her the keys
The wizard is FURIOUS! What might she say to the queen, before casting the final spell? “I told you not to defy me!” “You asked for this!” “Your people will never forgive you for this!”
Enraged, the wizard takes out her wand: Describe how she waves it: With a flourish, the wizard began casting her spell… With a flick of the wrist, the mystical wizardess began to… Her face red with anger, the wizard cast a mystical spell upon the queen…
All the adults in Attleborough are turned into potatoes: How would this spell look / sound as it is cast? In a cloud of smoke… With a devastating flash of bright light… A starchy smell filled the air…
Monday 16 th November 2020 LO: To write an innovated warning story
Innovating the resolution:
Without any adults, the children are free to roam around Attleborough! They have fun at first, but it gets boring very quickly! They became… Bored? Uninterested? Aimless? Idle? Weary?
They want the adults back, so they begin searching for the keys: How can we use adverbs to describe the way they searched? The children of the village searched anxiously / hopefully / frantically / furiously for the keys to the chip shop…
Hooray! The keys are found: The children quickly get them to the wizard! They feel… Hopeful? Joyful? Optimistic? Relieved? Excited? Pleased? The children excitedly gave the keys to the wizard, and pleaded with her to reverse her spell…
The wizard agrees and again takes out her wand: What happens this time? For a second time, the wizard began to wave the wand… Reluctantly, the wizard reversed her spell on the adults… The wand was waved by the mystical lady, and a bright flash occurred…
All the adults in Attleborough are turned back into humans: How would this spell look / sound as it is cast? The tiny, lumpy potatoes began growing arms and legs… Voices could be heard… Familiar faces emerged from the starchy lumps on the floor…
The queen is even turned back into a human, as well: How does the queen feel? How can we write this? Thankful Grateful Pleased Happy Relieved
