Chapter 7 Light, Color, Lighting
Types of Light • Directional - Precise Beam – Causes harsh shadows • Diffused - General illumination – omni-directional – no clearly defined shadows – used to illuminate large areas
Types of Light • Directional - precise beam – Sunlight – Flashlight – car headlights • causes harsh shadows • aim at specific area w/ o spill into other areas
Types of Light • Diffused - general illumination – seems soft and transparent – sunlight on a cloudy day – fluorescent lighting • seems to come from all directions • covers a large area
SHADOWS • ATTACHED – always bound to the illuminated object • CAST – seem independent of the object
COLOR TEMPERATURE • The standard by which we measure reddishness or bluishness of white light • measured in Kelvin degrees (outdoor 5,600k / indoor 3,200k) – more bluish the higher the color temp – more reddish the lower the color temp
WHITE BALANCE • Not all light sources produce the same whiteness – candle produces red light – fluorescent light produce blue – flashlight white (unless batteries are low - then red) • Proper white balancing is important
LIGHTING INSTRUMENTS • SPOTLIGHT (directional) – defined beam – cause harsh dense shadows • FLOODLIGHT (diffused) – non-directional – transparent shadows (slow falloff)

C-CLAMP & Safety Cable
Click for Larger view SPOTLIGTHS • Fresnel (fra- ’nel) – most have glass lenses – can be adjusted from spot(or focus) to flood by moving bulb reflector – BARN DOORS – size normally in wattage of quartz-halogen lamp (1K= 1,000 watts)
LED Fresnel
Click for Larger view SPOTLIGHTS • ELLIPSOIDAL – extremely sharp / high intensity beam – rectangular or triangular shape by moveable metal shutters – cookie cutters (gobo)
FLOODLIGHTS • No lens • Purpose is to create highly diffused / non- directional light • Shadows soft and transparent
LED LIGHTS • Litepanels Astra 6x
Soft Panels
Safety First • be sure power is off • Hold-on to ladder rails when climbing • always have assistant foot ladder • tighten C-Clamp • always place safety chain or cable • be certain cable is plugged in properly
Techniques • Triangle lighting principle – Key – Fill – Back – background light (optional)
Supplemental Web Site • Lighting Instruments • Key Light • Fill, Back & Background Light • Hard & Soft Light • Controlling Intensity
