  3. We have 8 distinct Alternative Programs in multiple sites:  Aboriginal Focus  All Boys  All Girls  Arts-Centred  Canadian Studies  Montessori  Science  Traditional Learning Centre (TLC)

Why Alternative Programs?  Providing families with choices to meet the unique learning needs of their child  Programs focus on a particular language, culture, subject (Arts, Science), or teaching philosophy  Informed choice is essential – what is THIS particular program about and how does it meet MY child’s needs?

Key Messages  Each program has unique features  Integrity of the program remains the same across sites  All follow Alberta Programs of Study with Alberta Teachers’ Association Certified Teachers  Where there is a lottery process, all families are eligible to apply  Aligned with system timeframe for registration

  6. Lottery Process  Where a program is oversubscribed the lottery process will be employed  Registrations are categorized using 3 criteria:  Category 1 - walk zone with siblings  Category 2 - walk zone no siblings OR bus zone with siblings  Category 3 - bus zone no siblings

  7. Timeline for Registration  Opens January 22nd  Closed noon on Tuesday before Teachers Convention (Feb 13)  Lottery drawn on Wednesday before Teachers Convention  Lottery outcome sent by the last school day in February  Parents must accept/decline by 2 nd Friday in March

  8. Elements of the TLC Program:  academic enrichment  character education  mandatory Music/Band until end of grade 9  French as a Second Language from grade 1

  10. The TLC classroom:  utilizes the gradual release of responsibility model  provides whole group instruction as primary teaching approach  has elementary classes organized in straight grades  sings O Canada daily

A TLC student demonstrates…  a willingness to participate in positive social interactions and take a leadership role when engaging in problem solving, acts of citizenship and service  respect for self, others, and the environment  a willingness to work independently within a structured setting  self-management and organizational skills  a commitment to daily homework

Kindergarten to Grade 3 • Approximately 545 students • 6 Kindergarten classes 3 AM/PM • 6 classes each of grade 1, 2, and 3 School Hours: • Monday to Thursday • AM Kindergarten:8:00 am – 10:51 am • PM Kindergarten:11:39 am – 2:30 pm • Grades 1-4 :8:00 am – 2:30 pm • Friday: • Alternate AM/PM Kindergarten • 8:00 am – 12:00 pm (K-Grade 3)
