  18. Background – Located on 507 acres – 15 miles SE of Denver – Owner/Operator – City of Denver/Waste Management Inc. – Operated as a municipal landfill prior to its designation as an *NPL site – Accepted solid and liquid industrial hazardous wastes (estimated 138 million gallons of hazardous substances disposed at site) – Selected remedy involves containment and treatment of hazardous substances * NPL – National Priorities List

  19. SELECTED REMEDY

  20. Chronology  1966 – 1980: Landfill accepted liquid and solid industrial wastes  1984: Designated Superfund Site  6 Operable Units(OUs)  OUs 1 and 6: shallow groundwater, subsurface liquids, and deep groundwater (ongoing);  OUs 2 and 3: landfill solids and gas and  OUs 4 and 5: soils, surface water and sediments  1984 – 1993 : Evaluation of remedial alternatives  1994: Record of Decision issued (Containment)  1997: Construction of remedy

  21. Chronology  2003: Contaminant 1,4 ‐ dioxane discovered in shallow groundwater north of site  2003 ‐ 2007: Investigation conducted to delineate extent of contamination  2006 ‐ present: Contingency operations initiated/ongoing to remove contaminant mass  Currently: Technical evaluations completed/underway in response to State and community concerns regarding groundwater remedy effectiveness

  22. Current Efforts  4rd FYR underway  required every 5 years to ensure protectiveness of human health and the environment is maintained throughout the life of cleanup  Considers changes in conditions/technologies over time that may impact or improve cleanup goals  Ongoing technical evaluation of groundwater remedy effectiveness  Are remedy components functioning as intended?  Is there a growth fault bisecting the site that may provide a migration pathway?  Does injection of potable water influence contaminate concentrations?  Is the statistical model used to determine groundwater compliance reliable?  Is the extent of the plume fully delineated?  Are extraction wells effectively providing capture of contaminants?  Is the 1,4 ‐ dioxane plume residual in nature or an indication of remedy bypass?  Are contingency activities effectively mitigating the north end plume?
