Students at KTA have a full range of academically rigorous courses available to them with a smaller student/staff ratio that allows for more one-to-one support and individualized attention.

Cl Class ssical/H /Humanities Co Components 6-7-8 8 • Formal instruction for Research Papers, including the MLA format with citations (Modern Language Association/most prominent format for libraries nationally/internationally • Formal Note Taking (Cornell Notes primarily) • Socratic Seminar – Formal discussion training (text based) where students learn to think critically and respond thoughtfully • Debate – Formal training to research and support a position, evaluate what is read and researched, and present a well developed position • Logic Training – Read, research and understand classic philosophers • Study and Test Taking Skills • Classic Literature • “Capstone” project and trip at the end of 8 th grade
AVI VID Advancement Vi Via Ind ndividual Determination • Program focused on student learning skills and strategies to advocate for themselves in a positive and meaningful way • GRIT and GROWTH MINDSET are key focal points – learning how to sustain efforts when things get difficult and realizing that not knowing something means…not knowing it ‘YET’ • College Bound focus as well ; all students can and will be prepared with skills needed to apply to and attend college when the time comes • Preparation for successful and positive transition to High School
Se Second Ste Step • This is a nationally recognized program implemented weekly for 30- 40 minutes during Advisory where students discuss and are explicitly taught positive behaviors and expectations for social and behavioral interactions with others. • Used at all Kyrene Middle School locations. • Teachers lead students through examples and discussions of scenarios and how to support each other with positive choices . • Students also learn how to access the many avenues of support at our school. • Direct connections to AVID.
Behavior and nd Disc scipline Info • Students are expected to follow our 3B’s: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible • Ms. Kosis is in an Academic/Behavior Support (ABS) role , with an office in our new building. She is most often the ‘first line’ for communication with parents about behavior and academic concerns in grades 6 and 7. She teaches the middle grade intervention programs as well. • She is part of the administrative/leadership team at KTA.
Soc Social Media dia • MONITOR your child’s phone and social media accounts! • MONITOR who they are communicating with, and what sites they are accessing. • MONITOR how they are engaged with friends and others in their posts, videos and chats. • When/If it carries over into school issues, we become involved and open another level of inquiry and monitoring.
Cell Pho hone Access ss Upd Update • We have been letting student access their personal cell phones during the last 15 min of lunch/recess. • We have limited space for their activities due to the building and construction projects. • We will be looking at how students handle this privilege, and decide about the continuation ; we will keep parents informed.
PTO Fall Fun undraiser Read-A-Thon! • SO Successful last year that we are doing it again! • Students get pledges for reading at home…and 100% of the money collected will go DIRECTLY to our PTO and our school! • Last year we raised almost $20,000 directly for KTA programs! • Kick Off is Sept 4! • Pledges from Sept 7-17 th . We encourage ‘out of town’ pledges online. • Students can earn great prizes! • Thanks to Mrs. Vanessa Rider, PTO President for all her hard work for KTA!
Build Building Upd pdate Final new facility to be completed by Dec. 1, 2018, which includes: multipurpose room, gym with changing rooms, stage, kitchen, band and music rooms
Athle letic ics Upd pdate • 2018-19 KTA students will continue to participate in team sports at Aprende. • JANUARY 2019 we will invite grades 6 and 7 to INTRAMURAL sports programs for winter and spring seasons . We are hoping to field intramural programs in Running Club, Strength and Conditioning, Dance Team, Basketball Clinic, Baseball Clinic • Next year (2019-20) KTA will work to field a full complement of all teams to join the middle school competitive field
Parent Tips Students must read 10-20 minutes per night! Research shows that this increases vocabulary by thousands of words and raises test scores, comprehension and cognitive capacity. Limit video games and internet use: no more than one hour per day! New research links internet addiction to brain scans similar to those addicted to cocaine and meth. (Newsweek 7/16/12). Engage in meaningful conversation with your child daily! Research shows that when adults are interested in what children have to say, it builds self esteem and confidence for a lifetime.

Dress s Cod ode Reminders • Sweaters and sweatshirts worn inside school must be red, white or navy blue • Outerwear can be any color • Colors are red, white and navy blue • Collared shirts required (vs. T-shirts) • Fridays: Jeans and Spirit Shirts OK • Skirts and bottoms need to be ‘uniform’ type fabric (not lace, sparkles) • Leggings/tights work under skirts/shorts need to be red, white or navy blue • Review KTA Handbook • Student Council for 6 th and 7 th grade will work on MORE free dress days for middle grades this year!
