  1. Knowledge & Technology Transfer Status Report Claudio Parrinello

  2. Contents Impact viewpoint Milestones from selected projects based on CERN knowledge and technologies. Quantitative viewpoint Invention and technology disclosures, licenses. Special Projects New CERN Intellectual Property (IP) Management Policy ( CERN/FC/5434/  RA ). CERN Global Network.  Finance Committee – 17 March 2010 2

  3. Impact (1/3) Milestones towards new medical imaging applications Colour X-ray images from MARS  project, based on MEDIPIX technology (courtesy of MARS scanner project ) 1 st clinical images Clinical images from ClearPEM-Sonic project  with ClearPEM (courtesy of Crystal Clear Collaboration) (more details in CERN/FC/5417/RA ) Finance Committee – 17 March 2010 3

  4. Impact (2/3) Hadron Therapy and related projects:  Two new EC-funded research projects where CERN plays a coordinating role  Other projects coordinated by CERN progressing well Finance Committee – 17 March 2010 4

  5. Impact (3/3) Progress of long-term partnerships with CERN towards new treatment centres Ready for irradiation in 2010 2009: focus on design optimisation of the accelerator complex and beam delivery lines Finance Committee – 17 March 2010 5

  6. Quantitative Viewpoint  7 new inventions disclosed, plus 2 technologies.  11 technology/market assessments undertaken.  11 R&D licenses, 2 commercial licenses and 2 partnerships.  4 patents filed (37 patent families at the end of 2009). The economic climate has limited transfers towards commercial partners. Finance Committee – 17 March 2010 6

  7. Special Projects: IP Management Policy  Defines founding principles for CERN technology transfer activities and the rationale behind IP management as a tool to maximize dissemination.  Explains under which conditions and why CERN will file patent applications. Patents as a tool, not a goal…  Introduces incentives, aiming to increase the volume of KTT activities. KTT income will be Redistributed to the units developing KTT projects; o Reinvested into new KTT projects. o  Provides a sound basis for communication with CERN personnel, Member States and Industry.  In line with the IP Charter presented to CERN Council on 18th September 2009 (CERN-Council- S/049) and the recommendations of the Commission of the European Communities (C(2008) 1329) published on 10th April 2008. Finance Committee – 17 March 2010 7

  8. Special Projects: CERN Global Network (1/2) CERN is a Knowledge Hub! Knowledge is: Brought into CERN by people from institutes worldwide; o Generated at CERN in the framework of its activities; o Exported outside CERN through people ʼ s mobility, o training, technology transfer, procurement, etc. Key players Current and former members of CERN personnel (including Users!)  Research Institutes/Universities.  Companies from Member States.  Finance Committee – 17 March 2010 8

  9. Special Projects: CERN Global Network (2/2) CERN Global Network: a facilitator for knowledge exchange  Dedicated web site Additional visibility for partnership opportunities across the Network (recruitment, technology transfer, training)  Member database Professional networking with CERN “Alumni” Useful data on researcher’s mobility and career evolution in Europe Discussion fora for special interest groups (experiments, etc)  Interactions between individual and institutional members Link job seekers with potential employers Exchange of best practices between institutions in specific thematic areas Organization of knowledge exchange events at CERN To be launched by end of April Finance Committee – 17 March 2010 9

  10. Summary and Perspectives  KTT is addressing the key priorities identified last year, in particular through the formulation of the new CERN IP Management policy (CERN/FC/5434/RA) and the preparation towards the CERN Global Network.  A number of CERN technologies are being exploited in projects with potentially high impact. CERN is also giving an important contribution to several high-profile knowledge transfer initiatives.  Encouraging results on disclosures and R&D licenses. Transfers towards commercial partners have been affected by the global economic downturn.  Priorities for 2010 include the full implementation and communication of the new IP policy and its incentive scheme, as well as the launch of the CERN Global Network. Finance Committee – 17 March 2010 10
