Grade 9s at K.C.S.S... * I wish I knew that grade 9 was going to be amazing and that I was going to meet new friends * it’s not scary - high school is just way better than elementary school * It’s not at all what I expected - I feel like I have found my place here * the teacher’s pressure me just enough to make me do better * ROC King activities were a lot of fun, I met new people and became friends with people I may not have otherwise * some people say our building is old - but I like it, it has charm * most of my friends ended up at other schools - I think I made the right decision, I like my teachers and all the people I have met

  21. Types of Course in Grades 9 & 10 ● Applied (P) ○ more opportunities for hands-on approach ○ more time to complete homework during class ○ slower paced , less theory ○ Develop students’ knowledge and skills through practical applications ○ maximum class size of 22

Tips for Parents… Recognize the importance of setting goals for the future by encouraging your grade 8 student to consider: ➢ Who they are now ➢ Who they want to be; and ➢ What opportunities are going to help their pathway (look to the future, but be informed by the past) Set aside time for this discussion…

Course Selection for all Pathways Grade 9 Grade 10 Grade 11 Grade 12 English English English English Mathematics Mathematics Mathematics Science Science Geography History Physical Education Career/Civics French 8 credits 8 credits 8 credits 6 credits (minimum) Compulsory credits Optional credits Additional compulsory credits include: Arts, Group 1, 2 and 3 Students need to be aware of prerequisites for course selection and for Post-Secondary destinations. Elective credits provide opportunities in areas of interest and hands on experiential learning .

Grade 10 Literacy Requirement ■ Administered in the spring of their Grade 10 year ■ A test based on language and communication (reading and writing) expectations of curricula up to and including Grade 9 ■ If a student does not pass the first attempt: ■ KCSS will provide remedial support; with opportunity to write the following year and/or ■ the student can successfully complete the Grade 12 Literacy course (OLC) (must attempt test at least once to be eligible).

Community Involvement ■ A diploma requirement ■ Must complete a minimum of 40 hours ■ Student’s responsibility to have activities pre-approved and submit verification upon completion ■ Guidelines and forms are provided ■ A great way to explore career interests ■ Students may begin hours after Grade 8 graduation

Course Selection Packages Registration packages will be delivered to our area elementary partner schools • Kettleby Public School ● Beynon Fields Public School • Kettle Lakes Public School ● Windham Ridge Public School • King City Public School • Macleod’s Landing Public School • Nobleton Public School • Oak Ridges Public School ■ KCSS Guidance will visit each of the schools in early December to deliver registration packages and help students with the course selection process
