Kenya is a country in East Africa with coastline on the Indian Ocean. Kenya has a warm and humid tropical climate on its Indian Ocean coastline. The climate is cooler in the savannah grasslands around the capital city, Nairobi, and especially closer to Mount Kenya, which has snow permanently on its peaks. Further inland are highlands in Central and Rift Valley regions where tea and coffee are grown as cash crops which are major foreign revenue earners. Population It currently stands at 48 Million. Savings and credit societies (Saccos), the fastest growing sub-sector in the movement, have mobilized savings of more than Kshs 230 billion. • The cooperative movement commands 67 and 62 per cent of the total assets and deposits/savings, respectively.

Magereza Savings & Credit Co-operative Society ltd was started in 1971 and registered with the Ministry of Co-operatives. The Sacco is licensed by the Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) as a deposit taking Sacco.
Magereza Sacco members are majorly drawn from the Prisons department and other government ministries as well as private institutions. Currently, the Sacco membership stands at 20,595 members.
