Changes to English Curriculum Based on the Next Gen Learning Standards • Increased reading – Students are reading texts that used to be a grade level above – Many Non-fiction texts are read in and out of the classroom – “Close Reading” requires students to read text multiple times • Students use text-based evidence to support their writing • Rigorous academic vocabulary and content-based vocabulary

Social Studies Framework The New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework is designed to prepare students for college, careers, and civic life with courses that are rigorous and aligned to Standards. This Framework integrates existing NYS Learning Standards and the NYS Core Curriculum for Social Studies. Students in 7 th grade will experience the following: • Challenging academic and content vocabulary • Rigorous reading material that allows students to expand their comprehension and understanding of history. • Writing projects that force students to pull information from the text to become better researchers and historians • Debates about the meaning and effects of the events described.

World Languages Benefits of learning a second language: • The life-long ability to communicate with people from other countries and backgrounds. • Americans fluent in other languages improve global communication, enhance our economic competitiveness abroad, and maintain our political interests. • Improved overall school performance and superior problem-solving skills. • Learning a second language can enhance knowledge of English structure and vocabulary. • Students of foreign language tend to score higher on standardized tests.
