Background ● The UN General Assembly resolution on the rights of Indigenous Peoples (A/RES/71/178 ) adopted in December 2016 proclaimed 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages (IYIL) ● The goals of the IYIL were many and the success relied on multi-stakeholder cooperation ● As official partner of the year, the LSA and SSILA were heavily involved in a number of activities ○ http://tinyurl.com/IYIL2019-LSA-SSILA

LSA/SSILA Plans for IYIL2019 ● 2019 Annual Meeting: Kickoff event; added abstract category; Natives4Linguistics organized session; pre- and post-meeting workshops; Wikipedia Edit-a-thon ● 2019 Summer Institute: Worked with directors to identify courses, lectures, workshops, and symposia on Indigenous languages ● Fall Perspectives Conference: Hosted at Purdue University Fort Wayne, October 30 - November 2. ● Special CfP for Language

  6. Local Language Programs ● The Southeast is home to many Native American languages ● Communities are actively engaged in (re)vitalizing their languages by any means necessary ○ Houma ○ Mississippi Choctaw ○ Chickasaw ○ Koasati ○ Muskogee

  7. CoLang ● Starting in 2008, CoLang (previously InField) has offered training in documentation and revitalization to hundreds of participants ● Next one is at the University of Montana ○ Workshops: June 15—26, 2020 ○ Practica: June 29—July 17, 2020
