Introduction of New Whole Blood Collection Bags and Pooled Platelets Bag Canadian Blood Services Implementation December 2014
Highlights Customer Letter #2014-17 • Macopharma vendor for the new whole blood collection and pooled platelets bags • Implementation will begin in December 2014 and the staggered national rollout is expected to be completed by September 2015. • New Red Cells & FP storage bags will be the same as the current Macopharma bags that have been used since 2004, primarily at hospitals serviced by CBS Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. However, due to our sharing of the national blood inventory, these bags have also been exported across Canada and many hospital customers are familiar with them. • New platelet pool storage bag is similar to an apheresis platelet bag in size ; the tubing is approximately 15 cm in length as compared to 25-30 cm on the current pooled platelets bag. • Spiking: Given the similarities between the ports fitted on the current bags and the new ones, the transition for spiking is expected to be seamless. Documents were provided with pictures and details on how to spike the new bags • Circular of Information for Red Blood Cells, Leukocytes Reduced (LR), and for Pooled Platelets LR CPD : a new version will be posted in December, 2014 at www.transfusionmedicine.ca and www.blood.ca.
