Tongariro Alpine Crossing  Day hike through alpine meadows, lava flows over volcanic mountain, around emerald lakes and concluding in forest landscape  119.4 km long and up to 1900 meters above sea level  7-10 hour hike depending on experience and optional side tracks  Side tracks to summits of Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom from Lord of the Rings!)  Last eruption was from Te Mauri, a small, northern crater only 3 years ago!
