Purpose of Tonight’s Orientation/Elective Expo: ● Visit Optional “Drop-In” Sessions to Learn About: ● Information for Students with IEP ● Drop by the School Based Health Center Table in room 144 and pick up a pamphlet ● Snap a Selfie in front of the Maine East backdrop in the Student Cafeteria! ● Gifted Lyceum Program Meeting at 7:45 - for invited students
Maine East High School: ● 1850 Students ● Approximately 50 Languages Spoken ● A great American high school with a history spanning over 100 years ● Offers 26 different Advanced Placement Courses, 21 Dual Credit courses, and a wealth of Elective Offerings ● Recognized and awarded at the regional, state, and national levels ● Linguistically, Culturally Diverse - Maine East is a Cross-Section of the World
How Many Classes Can I Take? 8 Periods = 6 Classes + Lunch/Study/ACA All are 1 Period: 1. English Class 2. Math Class 3. Science Class 4. Social Science Class 5. Physical Education Class 6. Elective #1 7. Elective #2 / Reading/Math Support 8. Lunch/Study/ACA
What are “Core” Subjects? ● Core Subjects : ➢ English/Reading – 4 credits (4 years) ➢ Mathematics – 3 credits (3 years) ➢ Science – 3 credits (3 years) ➢ Social Science – 3 credits (3 years) Note: Core subjects are also offered, when possible, in the Special Education and ELL Departments
Advanced Placement (AP) Courses ● College level courses taught in high schools ● Teachers teach to standards and assessments that are developed nationally ● Chance to earn college credit through performance on exam in May ● Students are expected to process information independently and develop higher level critical thinking skills ● Freshman students can expect 30-45 minutes of homework on average every night for an AP class
Dual Credit Courses ● College level courses taught in high schools ● Chance to earn college credit at the same time you fulfill graduation requirements ● Students are expected to process information independently and develop higher level critical thinking skills

Why should you join a Club or Activity? Research says that participating in at least one extra-curricular activity helps a student in many ways. Ex-Curricular Participants have Higher Better Fewer GPA’s Attendance Discipline Problems

Selecting Courses for Next Year Step 1 : Take the MAP placement assessment. If you have not taken the MAP, please call the Student Services Department at 847-692-8520 Step 2: Sign-up for an individual counselor registration meeting
Signing-up for Individual Counselor Registration Meetings ● Each student will sign up for an individual registration meeting in January or February with their counselor to select classes - Student and Parents attend ● Parents can sign up for an appointment tonight in the cafeteria ● Instructions for signing up will also been emailed out next week for those who do not sign-up tonight Parents with students with an IEP DO NOT sign up for an ● appointment because they will have their 8th grade IEP intake meeting in December and January where the counselor will attend ● Students from private schools or living in the optional area who are still deciding on schools should wait to sign up for an appointment until they decide.
Targets/Goals for This Evening: ● Target Goal: By the end of the evening, determine at least 3 electives you’d want to take next year ● Between now and the time you meet with your counselor (Registration) talk at home with your parents and be prepared to list three electives in priority order when you finalize your course requests for next year

Introductions/Final Remarks: ● Introduction of Administrators ● Student Guides to Assist You in Finding Rooms ● Spanish and Arabic speaking students available outside the auditorium ● 0xx (034) - Basement, 1xx (169) - 1st Floor, 2xx - 2nd Floor ● Think carefully about the elective classes you may wish to take. ● Some classes may fill and you may have to choose an alternate class. ● Make sure you rank your elective choices and choose carefully – once your schedule is set, students and parents may not drop or change classes.
