Huh? • What’s an organisation? • What do businesses do anyway? • What are the parts of a business, and what has technology got to do with any of it? – And hold on , what’s the difference between IT and Information Systems? – And why are we interested? 4
What is an IS? • Information is contextual data. A system is a set of things working holistically • An IS is a set of interrelated components that collect (or retrieve), process, store and distribute information for [decision making in] an organisation 5

CIO • Chief Information Officer (CIO) – oversees all uses of IT and ensures the strategic alignment of IT with business goals and objectives • Broad CIO functions include: – Manager – ensuring the delivery of all IT projects, on time and within budget – Leader – ensuring the strategic vision of IT is in line with the strategic vision of the organisation – Communicator – building and maintaining strong executive relationships 8

Other Roles • Chief Technology Officer (CTO) – responsible for ensuring the throughput, speed, accuracy, availability, and reliability of IT • Chief Security Officer (CSO) – responsible for ensuring the security of IT systems 10
Measuring the success of Technology • Key performance indicators (KPI) – measures that are tied to business drivers • Metrics are detailed measures that feed KPIs – Efficiency IT metric – measures the performance of the IT system itself including throughput, speed, and availability – Effectiveness IT metric – measures the impact IT has on business processes and activities including customer satisfaction, conversion rates, and sell- through increases 11

Competitive Advantages • To survive and thrive an organisation must create a competitive advantage(s) – Competitive advantage – a product or service that an organisation’s customers place a greater value on than similar offerings from a competitor – First-mover advantage – occurs when an organisation can significantly impact its market share by being first to market with a competitive advantage 13
Competitive Advantages • IS can offer competitive advantages – Think of Apple, DELL, AIB, RyanAir, … everyone! • “All companies are technology companies” • … “All companies are information companies” 14
