Identifying Relative Sizes of Measurement Units within the Customary & Metric Systems Demonstration Video
Customary Length
Inch = in. The distance between the knuckles on your index finger is approximately 1 inch.
Foot = ft. Your notebook is approximately 1 foot tall. 12 inches = 1 foot
Yard = yd. A baseball bat is approximately 1 yard long. 3 feet = 1 yard 36 inches = 1 yard
Mile = mi. Four laps around a running track is 1 mile. 1,760 yards = 1 mile 5,280 feet = 1 mile
Metric Length
Millimeter = mm The tip of a pencil is approximately 1 millimeter.
Centimeter = cm A paperclip is approximately 1 centimeter wide. 10 mm = 1 cm
Meter = m The width of a door is approximately 1 meter. 1,000 mm = 1 meter 100 cm = 1 meter
Kilometer = km Walking the distance from one end of a football/soccer field 9 times is equal to about 1 kilometer. 9 times 1,000 m = 1 kilometer
Customary Weight
Ounce = oz. A slice of bread weighs about 1 ounce.
Pound = lb. A loaf of bread weighs about 1 pound. 16 ounces = 1 pound
Ton = T A car weighs about 1 ton. 2,000 pounds = 1 ton
Metric Mass
Milligram = mg A grain of sand or a grain of salt has the mass of about 1 milligram. 1,000 milligrams = 1 gram
Gram = g A packet of sugar has the A paperclip has a mass of mass of about 1 gram. about 1 gram.
Kilogram = kg A textbook has the mass of about 1 kilogram. 1,000 grams = 1 kilogram
Customary Capacity
Cup = c A small cup of cofgee holds approximately 1 cup. 8 fluid ounces = 1 cup
Pint = pt. Ice cream sometimes comes packaged in a pint sized container. 2 cups = 1 pint
Quart = qt. Engine oil and transmission fluid comes in a quart sized container. 4 cups = 1 quart 2 pints = 1 quart
Gallon = gal. Milk comes in a 1 gallon container. 16 cups = 1 gallon 8 pints = 1 gallon 4 quarts = 1 gallon
Metric Capacity
Milliliter = mL Ten drops from an eye dropper is about 1 milliliter.
Liter = L Bottles of Soda come in 1 liter, 2 liter, or 3 liter sized containers. 1,000 milliliter = 1 Liter
