What Is Blood Pressure? ● Pressure exerted on the walls of the artery as blood is pumped through the body ● Produced primarily by contraction of the left ventricle
How Is Blood Pressure Measured? ● Recorded as two numbers: ○ Systolic ○ Diastolic ● Systolic: ○ Pressure within the arteries when the heart beats ○ Top number, higher of the two ● Diastolic: ○ Pressure in arteries between heart beats when the heart is resting ○ The bottom number Pressure within the arteries when the heart beats
What is Hypertension? ● Normal blood pressure: less than 120/80 ● Prehypertension: 120-139/80-89 ● Hypertension (stage 1): 140-159/90-99 ● Hypertension (stage 2): 160/100 or higher
Causes of Hypertension ● Being overweight or obese ● Lack of exercise ● Genetics ● Stress ● Excessive alcohol consumption ● Salt ● OLD AGE
Treatments ● Healthier diet/ less salt ● Exercise regularly ● Medication ● Stress management *Hypertension is a chronic disease which can be controlled but not cured *Very common: more than 3 million cases per year
