Approval has been given for a survey to be done this fall. From reports and talking with lake residents the moths have been seen mostly on the North side of the lake. It is likely there will be a recommendation the spraying will be done. Jim LaBerge added he learned through conversations with Charlie Findley our local Commissioner, approval was given by the County for the Gypsy M oth survey to be done this fall. The spraying will be done if enough egg masses are seen per acre. The survey cost is $8500.00 and will take place this fall after the trees lose their leaves. The County will be paying this cost from a fund they have for the Gypsy M oth issue.
Ken reported the Sherriff’s Department informed him they have been allocated additional funds for more road patrol on the North side of the county, which would include Long Lake. Ken hopes the issues we have at the beach and the park will be addressed. The dates for next year’s meetings including the Boat Parade, Golf Outing, Run like Hale, Road Clean-Up etc. are listed in the lower right hand corner of the agenda. Ken along with the Board extended a big thank you to all the people who help the Lake Association. John Lesich, Web Chair John Bartle, for placing monthly meeting signs Chris Tyll, Water Quality Testing Holly Kiehl, for placing and caring for the flowers around the LLPOA signs Jeremy Kloska, Chairman of the Fish Committee Julie Rubicz, Director of the Zone Committee and all of the Zone Directors Nate Vohwinkle, Boat Parade Chair Faith Dobson, Golf Outing Chair for many years who is moving away Fran Siems, Road Cleanup Chair Sharon Bartle, 50/ 50 Chair All the Run like Hale volunteers and all the Committee M embers. Ken announced we signed a rental agreement for this meeting room for next year. Sharon Bartle gave thanks to Bob Hearn for all he has done setting up the chairs for each meeting. Fish Report: Craig Egresics reported for Jeremy Kloska who sent his apologizes for his absence. Fish permits have been sent in for 1000 walleye and 1000 crappie. They will be stocked sometime in October. Pan fish are down because of the hot weather. Normal crappie, bass, and pike fishing. Walleyes were ranging between 13 inches to 29 inches. Jeremy personally went to the DNR office in Bay City to get the fish survey but it has not yet been completed. Jeremy will post it on our website when it becomes available. Golf Outing Report: Cameron Thomson “ apologized” for not being at the last meeting because he was getting married. Cameron and his brother Brandon will be spearheading the
golf outing for next year. Faith Dobson has been organizing the golf outing for the last 6 years but has recently moved to Arizona. This year we had 18 golfers. Next year our goal is to have at least 14 participants but would like to have it sold out. The proposed date for next year is August 12 or possibly the following weekend. It will depend on the number of people we have committed to play and if the weekend works with Kathy Baker. There are great prizes awarded. Some examples are from Alwards, Kathy Janes, free golf etc. There is no age limit. A question was asked if the outing could be changed from a Sunday to a Saturday. M any people would like to participate but return home on Sunday. The plan is to have it on Saturday next year. If anyone would like to help please get in touch with Cameron or Brandon Thomson. Water Quality Report: Chris Tyll reported the water clarity has been running about 14 ft. Friday, September 13, someone will be coming from M .S.U. to conduct the phosphorus and chlorophyll test with Chris. Chris spent a day with Grant on the boat conducting the weed survey. Grant will talk more about the survey in a minute. Ken asked Chris how the 14 ft. of clarity compares to the last few years. Chris stated the clarity has been around 12 ft. to 16 ft. for the last few years. Water M anagement Report: Grant Jones from Restorative Lake Sciences is filling in for Jennifer. Grant stated they have been out for two surveys and three treatments. The first treatment was in June. The treatment included 5 to 10 acres of Eurasian M ilfoil and 2 ½ acres of Native Pond Weed. The second treatment was in August where eleven acres of Native Pond Weed was treated. Chris rode with Grant for six hours that day. Grant said now that we have the M ilfoil under control we will focus on a proper balance of the native weeds. We do not want to overkill all the native plants while managing the M ilfoil. Don Schwarck asked the question if the Pond Weed is an invasive or native species. Native was the response from Grant Jones. Grant said they treat the native weeds that reached a nuisance level and they vary from year to year where they appear. A question was asked if the spray was heavy and does it sink and work on the roots? For the top weeds, it is a contact herbicide, a liquid sprayed on the surface. It is heavier than water but denser than water so it settles in and makes contact with the plants, so it should take care of it for next year. For Eurasian M ilfoil it is a systemic herbicide, which goes to the bottom, is taken up by the roots of the plant, and kills the entire plant. Pond Weed sometimes remains standing after a spraying but if you touch it will disintegrate. . Kathy Dant brought up the issue that the area around her dock has not been sprayed since the treatments have begun. She said nothing has been done by the road end at Pinellas and her area has Loosestrife. Grant said a few years ago, there was a loon’s nest and they cannot treat within a certain distance of a loon’s nest. Grant said he would personally treat her area if the loon’s nest is not there. A question was asked for the proper procedure to report weeds. Lynn Tyll stated to go to the LLPOA website and leave a comment or call a Board member directly. Grant will also get a list of anyone who left a comment.
