  12. INTEGRATION THROUGH SPORT Sport, and team sports like basketball in particular, is described in socio-political discourse as an effective way to integrate immigrants. Sport provides space for both integration and rest and health prevention. Sport and culture are tools to involve immigrants in public, often unpaid activities uniting residents. Sport is universal, it connects people across cultures and abolishes divisions of all kinds, so it is recommended to evaluate urban sports activities in terms of their participation in immigrants and ensure their inclusion in these projects, among others. In order to build social cohesion and prevent conflicts at district level. 13

  13. INTEGRATION – ACCESS: NEIGHBOURHOOD Often, economic and social structural causes are the root of the lack of access of many migrants to mainstream sport and clubs and societies. It appears that it is necessary to approach them on-site in their respective contexts, as especially young migrants often do not have the resources to use public transport, let alone pay club fees. 14

  14. INTEGRATION – ACCESS: NEIGHBOURHOOD In many European countries, urban areas with a very high proportion of migrants and particularly socially disadvantaged persons have developed in the course of several migration waves. Many community projects use sports „as a carrot“ . We can start to reach out to young people using sport as one of the main tools to attract mostly socially disadvantaged persons to give them a chance. 15

  15. INTEGRATION - DEVELOPMENT OF THE VOLUNTEER NETWORK Integration, in addition to providing institutional integration tools, is based on building social relationships, cultural exchanges. These processes are rooted in civic activity, mutual openness and curiosity. These processes should systematically support and create conditions for them to occur, for example by developing various forms and networks of volunteering. 16

  16. INTEGRATION - MENTOR A very important network of volunteers is the mentor. Volunteering in the area of teaching Polish as a foreign language and volunteering for immigrants in various institutions and organizations should also be developed. Immigrant volunteering may be geared towards the integration of immigrants, but it can be also a way to engage in urban, cultural, civic affairs and the area of integration and development of individual immigrant competences. 17

  17. INTEGRATION – ACCESS: SCHOOL Since education for children and adolescents is compulsory in all European countries, school is the social space in which a high number of young people from different social and ethnic backgrounds can be addressed through sport programmes. Also, research has indicated that parents from migrant/ethnic minority backgrounds often view the school as a safe, well organised and trusted environment and are therefore perhaps more disposed towards information received from this source. 18

  18. INTEGRATION - AMBASADOR Hence, it is particularly networks in schools which open up possibilities to address the target group of migrant young people. Especially for sport clubs in regions with a high immigration rate, access through school partnerships can be essential for the development of their own members. 19

  19. ANTI-RACIST AND INTERCULTURAL EVENTS Our event examples portray the public nature of sporting events as beneficial to, both, society and to the effort of raising the public’s awareness of the situation of emigrants, as well as to facilitate cross-cultural encounters. Event of this kind can be a basketball Cup, or any other sport cup, which will bring all comunity together - both players and their families. 20
