  1. History of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Community Building Projects • In 1978, a group of families petitioned Bishop Povish to consider a Catholic Church for the Goodrich area. • In August of that year, in what is now the Goodrich Library, the first Mass was celebrated. Word got out and after only 2 weeks the Masses were moved to the Goodrich High School cafeteria for the next 3 years. Religious Education programs began that Fall using the high school We also started up The Parish Pastoral Council, the Altar Society (now Council of Catholic Women), and the Men’s Club. • In 1979, land was purchased for the building site and a fund drive began. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1981, with 150 registered families by this time. The first Mass was celebrated in the newly constructed Church in January 1982. • In December 1989, the home west of the Church on Burpee Road was purchased as a pastoral residence. Just in time for Sr. Joan. The church mortgage was paid off in 1990 and plans immediately began for classroom space, offices and a hall. On March 20, 1994 Bishop Povish dedicated the new Parish Center. • But we weren’t done yet. St. Mark’s continued needs were met with • A new pavilion in 1990 • A pole barn in 1995 • A renovated sanctuary and worship space floor in 2012 • A sports field in 2014 • In the last 5 years we also created a Peace Prayer Garden, a Labyrinth and added an electric sign • In 2016 the Diocese of Lansing launched Witness to Hope which was a diocesan wide capital campaign drive. St. Mark was able to include in this campaign a much needed Parking Lot Reconstruction. This was completed in 2018 and was completely paid off in April of this year. • As you can see, we have been a growing and vibrant community these past 42 years!

  2. St. Mark has grown to over 420 Families. Our commissions, lead by our parishioners: Social Justice, Education, Worship and Parish Life, guide the many different ministries of our Parish Family like our Back Pack Ministry, Council of Catholic Women, Men’s Club, Youth Group, Faith Formation, Our Alpha Program, Liturgical Ministries, Parish Dinners and Breakfasts, etc. Our Parish Council and Finance Council guide our vision for the future. St. Mark is alive and thriving with the LOVE OF CHRIST! It is important to keep moving, growing and making our parish home a place to celebrate!

  3. The he C Chu hurc rch h Ceiling ling Pr Proje ject ct • Originally the St. Mark Finance Council had begun a 2 phase project that included the parking lot and the Church Ceiling Project. Drawings were put together and bids sought, but the Witness to Hope campaign was only able to support phase 1, the Parking Lot. This year, with the parking lot paid off, they unanimously voted to move forward with Phase 2 of the project: The Church Ceiling. • The Textured “Popcorn” ceiling is outdated and needs improvements. • The Popcorn ceiling is breaking down in certain places and will continue to deteriorate. • Replacing popcorn in spots results in a patched look. • Water leaks will continue to damage ceiling. • Lighting above the altar is not adequate and needs improvement. • Sound system is old and inadequate.

  4. 2016 16 Capital pital Campaign mpaign • The Capital Campaign we began in 2016 was meant to include the parking lot and the Church ceiling. • The parking lot became the priority, as not enough was raised to include the ceiling at that time. • Architectural drawings, however, were completed for the ceiling. • Our Witness to Hope loan has been paid off so outstanding pledges can now be used for the ceiling. Outstanding pledges amount to about $101K. Based on current performance we already know that about 16% will not be paid. Campaign was for 5 years and officially ends in second quarter 2021. • To date, a few individual donors have contributed $15K for the ceiling.

  5. Description of Remaining Project • Remove existing ceiling in the Nave and Sanctuary of the church and replace with new drywall. • Install Coiffured Faux Wood Beams to ceiling. • Add crown molding. • Replace all lighting fixtures and lighting controls. • Bring up to code existing ductwork in ceiling. • Remove and replace existing speakers. • Install new sound board. • Add conduits for wireless antennas. • Install wiring and jacks for future technology (cameras, video, etc.).

  8. Cos osts ts • Original quote in 2014 was $250K • By completing the Gathering Space and contracting directly with electrical and construction contractors our current bid from a local builder, Lang Construction is at $150K. This is the construction of the ceiling, electrical and lighting.

  9. Sound and Video System • The addition of a new sound system would greatly enhance our worship space and liturgies. Since this is not a requirement of the ceiling changes, we have tagged this as a separate project with a price tag of $17K. • A video camera system will enable St. Mark to continue to offer livestreaming of our Liturgies at a cost of $18K. • If we are able to raise this remaining money we can incorporate this into the main project.

  10. About Our Project • The project was approved by the diocese at the time of the Witness to Hope Capital Campaign. • ALL DONATIONS WOULD COME DIRECTLY TO ST. MARK • The Project will begin August 3 rd and last for about 12 weeks. • Anyone interested in donating specifically to this project can do one of the following:
