Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations FAO Strategic Objectives • FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger and its major focus is on agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related areas. • FAO has 5 strategic objectives namely: • SO1 - Eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition • SO2 - Increase and improve provision of goods and services from agriculture, forestry and fisheries in a sustainable manner helping to build a world without hunger

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations FAO Strategic Objectives (continues) • SO3 - Livelihoods of rural populations and in particular for women and youth improved through enhanced employment opportunities and conditions, increased access to productive resources and rural services • SO4 - Enable more inclusive and efficient food and agricultural systems at local, national and international levels • SO5 - Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises helping to build a world without hunger

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Mandate of FAO • To eradicate hunger • Achieving food security for all is at the heart of FAO's efforts - to make sure people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives • Gather, process and disseminate information relating to nutrition, food and agriculture • Promote and recommend national/international action with respect to nutritional, food and agriculture interventions • Provide technical assistance and capacity building to governments upon request helping to build a world without hunger

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Partnerships • FAO recognizes that the challenge of poverty cannot be left to individual organizations hence various players such as CSOs play a critical role in the fight against hunger given their technical expertise, their proximity to and representation of the hungry and poor, and their increasing presence in the field. • Effective engagement with the private sector can help the fight against hunger and malnutrition by enhancing FAO’s work in agriculture, fishery, forestry, natural resource management, and the food value chain from farmer to consumer helping to build a world without hunger

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Partnerships • FAOZA is currently busy in identifying potential stakeholders to form partnership with. • Objective of FAOZA partnership and communication strategy is to enhance and facilitate strategic partnerships for food security and nutrition, agriculture and rural development between FAO and government departments, development partners, civil society and the private sector, and define which form each specific partnership should take.. helping to build a world without hunger

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Current projects in South Africa • Capacity Building for South African Professionals in the Field of Agriculture and Food Security (with initial emphasis on International Development Cooperation) • FAO support for CAADP • Public understanding of aquaculture • Support Conservation Agriculture • Telefood food security micro projects helping to build a world without hunger

  12. “Capacity Building for South African Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Professionals in the field of agriculture and food security” The project is funded by RSA Government Objectives • Increase knowledge and skills of government officials for more effective management of Govt. of South Africa’s international development cooperation programmes (supporting food security and agricultural rehabilitation). E.g. – Dept. of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) R180 million food relief to Lesotho by World Food Program. • Capacity building for effective policies, strategies and service delivery in support of emerging farmers • Currently implementing the project in two pilot provinces (KZN and Mpumalanga) • Working with DAFF and Eastern Cape Dept. of Agric to expand project to Eastern Cape helping to build a world without hunger

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) • FAO is supporting Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) to develop the CAADP Process. • Expected results are Policy briefs reviewed. • A report on priority investment areas along the four CAADP pillars. • CAADP implementation roadmap with an accompanying monitoring and accountability framework and related capacity strengthened. helping to build a world without hunger

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Public Understanding of Aquaculture Objective • Provide a comprehensive market and policy analysis, to identify the public understanding of aquaculture and to develop a five-year aquaculture awareness programme. • The results are-Aquaculture reference database, a searchable web based resource, with an accompanying brief • A framework outlining a five year aquaculture awareness programme helping to build a world without hunger

Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations “Regional Dissemination of Knowledge, Information and Experiences on Conservation Agriculture (CA) Activities in Southern Africa” Objectives • to enhance household and national food security while combating the potential impact of climate change by promoting sound and sustainable farming practices • to build awareness of the potential benefits of CA in countries where it is not widely practiced or understood • To document and analyse past and current CA activities in the region to identify best practices and lessons learned helping to build a world without hunger

  16. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Telefood Projects • FAO programme established to finance micro-projects. Objective: to finance micro-projects (production inputs) in developing countries such as poultry and communal gardens. • Purpose- to help poor people free themselves from their daily struggle to get enough food to eat. It aims at improving the capacity of poor and vulnerable families to produce more food and generate cash income for more sustainable livelihoods helping to build a world without hunger
