Health Leaders Fellowship Practicum Overview
Purpose of the Practicum • For fellows to gain hands on experience putting into practice the information and skills gained during the program • To work on real campaigns that impact environmental health in our state and communities
Requirements • Time commitment: minimum 20 hours • Time frame: Now- end of January 2019 • Practicum projects must: – Be related to subject matter covered during the fellowship i.e. toxics, climate and energy, or sustainable food systems – Use a combination of civic engagement skills learned throughout the program i.e. campaign planning, public policy actions, media and communications training, or campaigns to make change within an institution • Practicum projects may be: – One larger guided practicum project completed individually or in teams focusing on one issue area – A combination of civic engagement activities selected from the practicum passport document in consult with EC staff (on one or more topics)
Example Passport Option 1 Single issue area: Energy and Climate • Person engages in candidate education meetings related to climate and energy • Provide public comment to the Michigan Public Service Commission on importance of energy legislation and health outcomes • Writes and submits an LTE to their local newspaper on the health implications of climate change
Example Passport Option 2 Combination of issue areas • Meet with institution leaders to connect them with a local community-based food initiatives • Provide a quote for a press release on the connections between energy production and health outcomes • Person engages in candidate education meetings related to childhood lead poisoning
