  9. 09/ 02/ 2017 Don’t Hate Educate Campaign The UK Youth Parliament’s ‘Make Your Mark’ ballot was open to all young people aged 11-18 in the UK, and took place between 12th August 2015 until 9th October 2015. A record 968,091 young people voted in the ballot. Over 95,000 young people voted tackling racism and religious discrimination as a priority The UK Youth Parliament House of Commons debate chaired by the Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow MP took place 13 th November 2015 where Members of Youth Parliament voted to make this their national campaign leics.police.uk Campaign Aims: • Challenge negative attitudes around race and religion • Work with others to educate their communities to tackle ignorance around race and religion • Promote integration in communities In Leicestershire we wanted to extend these aims to cover all categories of hate crime and send a clear message that there is no place for hate in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. leics.police.uk 9

  10. 09/ 02/ 2017 What have we been doing • Hate Crime Awareness Event - Blaby District Council • Screening of Dark Angel and Black Roses – Groby College • Chairman of Blaby District Council’s Civic Service • Hate Crime Symposium • School Resource Pack • Hate Crime Awareness Session across Oadby & Wigston Borough leics.police.uk Blaby District Council Event On the 5 th July we held our first hate crime awareness event at • Blaby District Council • About 50 people from attended including District Councilors, Parish Councilors, staff from local schools and Blaby District Council • We told people about the Don’t Hate Educate campaign • Looked at the hate crime definitions and the impact of hate crime on victims, their families, friends and communities • Played the SOPHIE game which is designed to challenge stereotyping • Played a number of hate crime videos leics.police.uk 10

  11. 09/ 02/ 2017 Screening of Dark Angel & Black Roses • In 2007 Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Rob were walking home one evening when they were attacked in a local park in Lancashire by a group of 5 teenagers. • Sophie tried to protect Rob’s head from the attack when the group turned on her, she died 2 weeks after the attack. • Sophie’s mum set up to the Sophie Lancaster Foundation and works with the government, police, schools and local authorities on hate crime. • In July Sophie’s mum Sylvia came to Groby College for 2 days, she spoke to nearly 1000 students about hate crime and we watched the Black Roses film. • We also had a question and answer session with Sylvia, the Police and Crime Commissioner Lord Bach and Inspector Eveleigh leics.police.uk Chairman of Blaby District Council’s Civic Service leics.police.uk 11

  12. 09/ 02/ 2017 Hate Crime Symposium leics.police.uk Hate Crime Symposium • During half term we held our Hate Crime Symposium at City Hall in Leicester • Around 60 young people from across the City and County attended the event • We talked about Anti-bullying week and this year’s theme is Power for Good and how everyone has the power to do good around bullying and hate crime. • We looked at different Journeys people often take, including those fleeing persecution, we then set the room a challenge of how we can make Leicester and Leicestershire a welcoming and friendly place • We ended the morning session with a video from this years Holocaust Memorial theme of Don’t Stand By leics.police.uk 12

  13. 09/ 02/ 2017 Hate Crime Symposium Faith Information Exchange • In the afternoon we had our Faith Information Exchange • We had representatives from the • Baha'i • Buddhist • Christian • Jewish • Islam • Sikh • The room was split into 6 tables and each faith had 10 minutes talking about their faith before moving on the to the next table leics.police.uk Hate Crime Symposium Call for Action • The last session of the day was a call for action • Each table made a list of the things they would like to see schools, Local Authorities and the Police to do to tackle hate crimes • This will be included on our campaign report • We are also producing a pack of resources for schools to help them tackle bullying and hate crime leics.police.uk 13
