Principle Score Principle 1 – Target Species 80.8 GULF MENHADEN CURRENT STATUS Principle 2 – Ecosystem 83.4 Principle 3 – Management System 82.3 Condition Condition PI number The client must provide evidence of the implementation of a harvest strategy that is designed to take into consideration the ecological role of Gulf 1.2.1 1 menhaden and is responsive to the state of the stock with respect to its role in the ecosystem. The client must provide evidence of implementation of well-defined harvest control rules that take into consideration the ecological role of Gulf 1.2.2 menhaden and that; 1) ensure the exploitation rate is reduced as the point where serious ecosystem impacts could occur and; 2) are expected to keep the 2 stock fluctuating around a target level consistent with ecosystem needs. There shall be a regular review of the potential effectiveness and practicality of alternative measures to minimise UoA-related mortality of ETP 2.3.2 species and they are implemented as appropriate . “Regular review” in this context meaning at least once every 5 years. The ‘regular review’ at SG80 3 may be met if at least one review of alternative measures has been undertaken, that measures are implemented as appropriate, and there is a commitment from the client or the management body to have another review within the 5 year window. The client must provide evidence that adequate data continue to be collected to detect any increase in risk level posed to the elements of the northern 2.5.3 4 Gulf of Mexico ecosystem as a result of the Gulf menhaden fishery. Clear long-term objectives that guide decision-making, consistent with MSC fisheries standard and the precautionary approach are explicit within 3.1.3 management policy. In order to achieve the SG 80 scoring level for this PI within the prescribed certification timeframe, milestones have been defined and 5 incorporated within the client action plan for the fishery . Short and long-term objectives , which are consistent with achieving the outcomes expressed by MSC’s Principles 1 and 2 , are explicit within the fishery- 3.2.1 specific management system. In order to achieve the SG 80 scoring level for this PI within the prescribed certification timeframe, milestones have been 6 defined and incorporated within the client action plan for the fishery.
