JAM Sesh 2014 GRADING. YOU LOVE IT.
AGENDA! Ò Grade What You Value! Ò Grading Essays & Time Management! Ò Plotting Out Assignments! Ò What to Do When Kids Are Slipping!
GRADE WHAT YOU VALUE Ò Correctness/Completeness É What is mastery? É What is your minimum? É How will you teach/re-enforce expectations? Ò Improvement É What if they don’t get it when you assess? Ò Self-Advocacy É What if they can’t do a hw assignment?
TIME MANAGEMENT AND GRADING Ò Utilize your planning period! Ò Grading everything at once can be overwhelming, chunking the work you have to grade makes the time go by faster. Ò Set a goal for when you want to return assignments back to students that is considerate of the student but also feasible within your schedule.
BEST PRACTICES FOR GRADING AND TIME MANAGEMENT Do NOT wait until the end of the quarter to grade all of your assignments. Ò Have grading parties with colleagues…and bring snacks. Ò Use an answer key/rubric for everything. Ò Prioritize the most important assignments. (Grading a project is much more important than Ò grading an extension activity worksheet.) When giving quick Multiple Choice question assignments, utilize Trade and Grade! Ò Grade a subset of each assignment Ò Student helpers Ò
DOCUMENTATION Ò Be sure to document and record students who are consistently scoring low or not completing assignments. Ò If, by the end of the grading period, that student is supposed to receive a D or an F, you will need documentation of that students lack of completed work, evidence of parental contact, and evidence of interventions on your behalf to prevent the student from failing.
PLOTTING OUT ASSIGNMENTS Ò What will your grade book look like at the end of the quarter? Ò Can you play your own system?
WHAT TO DO WHEN KIDS ARE SLIPPING Ò PARENTS PARENTS PARENTS É Contract? É Required parent signature? Ò Coaches Ò Weekly Youtube Address Ò Classdojo.com Ò Purposeful Grouping During Tutoring
