Governor’s Honors Program 2018-19
What is GHP? ○ The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school students who will be rising juniors and seniors during the program. The program offers instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom and that is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders.
GHP Facts ○ GHP is held June 16-July 13, 2019 Berry College in Rome ○ Students attend classes in the mornings and afternoons in specific areas of study ○ Wide variety of social and instructional opportunities every evening ○ Meals and rooms are provided by the program ○ Only required costs are travel expenses to and from the interviews/GHP and spending money as desired during the program.
Nomination Areas Agricultural Research, Biotechnology, and Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) Science Communicative Arts Social Studies Dance Theatre Engineering : Computer & Software Engineering Mechanical Design Visual Arts Mechanical & Electrical Engineering World Languages (Chinese, French, German, Mathematics Latin and Spanish) Music (Brass, Jazz, Percussion, Piano, Strings, Voice and Woodwinds)
Requirements for Participation ○ Students shall be nominated to the state in only one subject area, by the subject area instructor, with the approval of the student and parent/guardian and following the district/school nomination process. ○ Students nominated for the 2018 program as sophomores who did not participate in the program last summer may be nominated for the 2019 program. This includes students who were selected as finalists in 2018 but declined the opportunity to participate last summer. ○ Students shall participate in the GHP summer residential program one time only, i.e., students who attended the 2018 program as rising juniors may not be re-nominated for the 2019 program. ○ An official transcript of each nominee’s high school grades must be submitted electronically by the appropriate school official.
Qualifications Be a current sophomore or junior. ○ Have his/her nomination originate with the subject area teacher (or home school parent) and ○ approved by the student and parent/guardian. Have demonstrated high aptitude and high interest in the area of nomination. ○ Commit to participation in the state level interviews as scheduled by the GHP office if selected as ○ a state semi-finalist. Commit to participation in the program for the entire residential period if selected as a state ○ finalist, including opening and closing days . Inability to meet the attendance requirement will result in disqualification for consideration, and, if ○ selected for participation, can result in dismissal from the program. Exceptions to the attendance requirement will be rare, will be limited to true emergencies, and will require approval by the GHP Program Manager.
Timeline ○ Local Applications must be submitted by October 18 th ○ SCCPSS notifies students of “moving on” status Nov. 1 st ○ Online Application opens for next level Nov. 16 th ○ Deadline for completing online application Jan. 4 th ○ Notification of semifinalists and interview/audition times Jan. 25 th ○ Semi Finalist interviews @ Berry College Feb. 23 rd ○ Notification of Finalists and Alternates March 29 th ○ Deadline for Acceptance April 8 th ○ Last day to invite Alternates May 22 nd ○ GHP @ Berry College June 16-July 13
