The NSW Government has invested $12 million into workplace health until June 2016 Overall goal To contribute to the reduction of lifestyle-related chronic disease risk in adults in the paid workforce Particular focus on adults aged 35-55 years Addresses modifiable risk factors including; poor diet, physical inactivity, overweight / obesity, smoking and alcohol misuse Partnership between NSW Health and WorkCover NSW
Service components Brief Health Workplace Health Program Check To increase the number of workplaces that provide best practice health To increase the number of promotion activities to workers to workers who are aware of their reduce their risk of lifestyle-related risk of developing type 2 chronic disease diabetes and heart disease and are provided with opportunities to reduce their risk
What does the service offer? Workplace Health Program All the tools, resources and support an organisation needs to: Prioritise a single health issue Develop a workplace health action plan Implement, monitor and review the program Continuously address health issues, one-by- one, over time
Six health focus areas Making it easy for businesses to develop strategies and address environments that help workers to: Meet national Reduce Meet national Maintain a Use active physical Reduce harmful healthy eating healthy modes of activity smoking alcohol guidelines weight transport guidelines consumption
What does the service offer? Brief Health Checks Confidential service for individual workers to understand their risk of developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease: Free, confidential and voluntary Takes only 15 minutes Provides immediate feedback and advice The only measurement is of the waist Referral to lifestyle coaching programs and other health services
For larger workplaces Brief Health Check Summary Report: If more than 50 workers complete the Brief Health Check Provides businesses and/or sites with a snapshot on the health of the workforce E.g. % high risk of developing diabetes % current smokers De-identified data and results remain anonymous

Service providers 18 accredited service providers State-wide, multi-region and single region providers Competitive tendering process Providers are auto-allocated by the system OR businesses can enter a unique code to request a particular provider Delivery of both service components (workplace health program and Brief Health Checks)
Get Healthy Points All organisations have an opportunity to earn Get Healthy points (public sector organisations are exempt) Kick-starts Workplace Health Program implementation (step 4) Available for a limited time Points can be used to purchase goods and services to improve the health of workers For example: –Tools to promote physical activity/walking such as pedometers –Access to an expert to develop and implement smoke-free policy

Monitoring and program evaluation Since August 2013, a series of pilots have been delivered in 16 businesses from the manufacturing and transport industries Enabled the service delivery model to be tested and refined Get Healthy at Work officially launched on 30 June 2014 Summative Evaluation supported by The Australian Prevention Partnership Centre (TAPPC), University of Sydney will commence in February 2015
