  1. Gamma astronomy at CPPM with HESS & CTA H. Costantini Aix-Marseille Université, CPPM CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  2. Why Gamma Astronomy? CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  3. Why Gamma Astronomy? • Gamma rays are produced in the most extreme environments of the Universe Gamma Ray Bursts relativistic jets produced by massive and shock waves produced by a star supermassive black holes explosion ( SuperNova ) • Gamma rays can be used to explore Frontiers in Physics: dark matter annihilation signature quantum gravity effects in photon propagation CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  4. Connection cosmic rays-gamma-neutrino Detection of astrophysical neutrinos is smoking gun for CR source!! Detection of Gamma Rays at >100 TeV is a signature for CR sources!! p ν π ± p γ π 0 Inverse Compton e ± γ protons/nuclei electrons/positrons radiation fields and matter CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  5. High energy Gamma detection • The mirror reflects the Cherenkov photons I ncoming energetic gamma • The camera is on the focal plane of the mirror • The shower image is detected by the camera Shower of e- and e+ 1.3 o The atmosphere is part of the detector Cherenkov cone 10 km ~120 m CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  6. HESS HESS camera located in the Namibia desert 1 large + 4 middle size telescopes stereoscopic reconstruction of the gamma shower shower image seen in all 5 telescopes CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  7. HESS @ CPPM • Physics Analysis: • Research of TeV gamma rays from microquasars • observations following alerts • monitoring of X-rays and radio data to trigger VHE observations with HESS compact objects ( neutron star or black hole ) accreting mass from a companion star CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  8. CTA: Cherenkov Telescope Array • sensitivity x10 • 20 GeV - 300 TeV • 2 sites: Southern site (Chile), Northern Site (La Palma, Canary Islands) CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  9. CTA: a world wide effort CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  10. CTA South CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  11. CTA Galactic discovery search CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  12. CTA @ CPPM MST • Acquisition system and EventBuilder for the MST (NectarCam) and LST (LSTCam) • First NectarCam calibration data available LST Camera stimulator at CPPM • MC simulations, data-MC comparison and performance evaluation of GCT (one of the SST prototypes) • First on sky data at Paris ( 2017 ) • First on site data at Chile ( 2019 ) GCT prototype at Observatoire de Paris (Meudon) CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  13. CTA @ CPPM • Search for PeVatron (Cosmic ray source with E>PeV) candidates in the galactic plane survey (full CTA and first CTA layout) • Early Science : Observation on promising sources Simulated CTA galactic plane survey CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017

  14. Training for Students • Seminars and Computer projects will be proposed by the HESS/CTA group • Research M2 internship (s) followed by PhD Thesis projects will be proposed on: • Data analysis for physics in HESS (binaries) and extrapolation for CTA • Monte Carlo studies of CTA performance for galactic science at extreme energies and participation to CTA data analysis in first phases • M2 specialised lecture : Astroparticles given by J.P. Ernenwein in 2 nd semester CTA/HESS - P3TMA - 5 September 2017
