Future Plans for the DUNE Beam Group Laura Fields and Zarko Pavlovic 1 8 Feb 2018
Introduction • This group has been on hiatus since August 2017 • And is now under new leadership (welcome Zarko!) • During the hiatus, a major beam design choice was made • Optimized beam will go forward to preliminary design • This talk reviews some of the beam-related work going on now (or that is planned soon) • In many cases, work will only get done if people are available to do it • Let us know if you are interested in any of this • Or if there are things not mentioned here that should be on our radar 2 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
Supporting LBNF Beamline Design • Historically, one of the most important roles for this group has been studying the physics impact of changes to the beamline design You just heard about LBNF status/plans from Vaia This work will continue to be a central focus of our work going forward; this is a good place for new collaborators to get involved 3 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
Supporting DUNE Physics Groups • This group also provides the starting point (neutrino flux predictions) for all accelerator-based physics studies • Needs of the LBL/far detector groups have historically been pretty simple • Mainly they just want a flux • We should generate a large sample of the current design and encourage them to use it • More complex requests have come from the near detector group • Detailed info on beam systematics • Fluxes at off-axis angles 4 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
A Recent (and Periodic) Request from Physics Groups • Tau neutrinos are present via oscillations at the far detector • There are also some intrinsic tau From CD1-R CDR neutrinos in the beam, arising from charm production in the target • We periodically get requests for estimates of this flux • These are not present in our simulation • G4 (and MARS) don’t produce charm • Options • Combining Pythia with G4 • Using Fluka (which does produce charm) • Not high priority, but would be a useful contribution if anyone is interested 5 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
Public Plots / Preparing for TDR • Since we have a beam design that is unlikely to change dramatically in the near future, it is a good time to update From CD1-R CDR our public plots • I think we should develop a suite of plots that describe details of our flux, with information commonly requested • Fluxes at both detectors vs neutrino flavor • Divided by neutrino ancestor? • Flux uncertainties • Alternate (ME and HE) configurations? • This also prepares for our contribution to the TDR (due in 2019) 6 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
Systematic Uncertainties • We produced our first complete estimate of DUNE flux uncertainties in 2016 for the ND task force • It is time to update those uncertainties to reflect the new beam design • Also needed by LBNF team setting tolerances • The near detector group has also asked for additional information • Uncertainties on ratio of muon neutrino and electron neutrinos • Uncertainties vs neutrino angle • Uncertainties at various off axis angles • Some of this work is already underway in the ND group • Will arrange a talk from them soon • A. Bashyal (OSU) working on hadron production — expect updates from him too 7 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
New Hadron Production Measurements • Measurements are being made at NA61 that will further improve our flux uncertainties • An important contribution we should make: what hadron production measurements are most needed for DUNE? • DUNE Flux spectrometer concept introduces possibility of building a hadron production program at Fermilab beyond NA61 • This work has a leadership (and effort) vacuum with the departure of Paul Lebrun) 8 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
Muon Monitors • There is ongoing effort to design Muon monitors • Expect an update on status of this work soon 9 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
Learning From NuMI • There are several ongoing efforts for NuMI that this group should be aware of: from Katsuya Yonehara • One is a renewed effort to analyze data from the NuMI muon monitors • Started by Katsuya Yonehara • being picked up by Tyler Rehak • Also continuing muon monitor simulation most recently done at Colorado • Expect some updates from Tyler here 10 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
Learning From NuMI • There are several ongoing efforts for NuMI that this group should be aware of: from Jim Hylen • Another is ongoing investigations of a reconstructed energy spectrum mismodeling seen by MINERvA and MINOS+ • Consistent with a mismodeling of focusing system (e.g. large longitudinal shift in target or horn current) • Next steps: measurements of horn magnetic field in current equalization section 11 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
New Electromagnetic Simulations • Based in part on the ongoing NuMI investigations, there is also a plan to do detailed electromagnetic simulations of the horn magnetic fields • Our current simulation assumes a simple 1/r falloff of field, does not include details such as current asymmetry and fringe fields • Studying the effect of a new field map will be a high priority for this group when it is available 12 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
Long Term Physics Goals • It is also important that we consider long-term uses of the LBNF beamline • Raja Fellow Jogesh Rout is at Fermilab for the next ~3 months studying beam optimization for long- term physics goals • Important to maintain optimization infrastructure to support LBNF design work • Mary B. has proposed an alternative to DUNEPrism using different beam configurations (instead of off-axis angles) 13 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
Miscellaneous • Other smaller but important tasks: • Code cleanup: • G4LBNF has grown into a large beast, to accommodate a lot of design ideas • Paul Lebrun (the main author of G4LBNF) strongly recommends a major overhaul • Documentation/Tutorials • Most of this was written by me years ago, and could use a refresh • If you are a new person following these tutorials, feel free to fix them as you find outdated information 14 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
Conclusion • Even though the large beam optimization effort is complete and beam design work is at a lull currently, there is lots of work to do • Let me and Zarko know you are interested in getting involved • Or if you think there are other things that we’ve missed in this talk 15 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
And Finally… • Paul Lebrun has a been a critical part of the beam design and simulation effort for many years • He is retiring tomorrow • There will be a farewell party soon — details will be sent to mailing list • Thank you Paul, for everything you have done • I really don’t know what we are going to do without you! 16 BIWG Plans 8 Feb 2018
