FUTURE OF FUTURE OF STAT STATIO ION 1 N 1 210 N. Salem Street Apex Town Council Work Session September 3, 2019
CURREN URRENT C T CONDITI TIONS • Originally constructed in 1954 • Building additions were made in the 1961 and sometime in the 1970’s. • Our most “active” station for public interaction. • The most challenging station in terms of working/living conditions.
Station on 1 1 Renovation on P Proj ojec ect • In CIP for several years with the intent of improving the overall function of the building as an operating fire station. • Funding for design was included in the FY18-19 budget. • Completed an RFQ process and Davis Kane Architects were selected due to their experience with renovating older fire facilities. • Their work included a high level inspection of the facility and programming discussions with Fire Department personnel.
Limitations i identified b by D Davis Kane • Firefighters have no way to access the first floor from the second floor except through the use of the stairs on the south end of the building. This increases response time. • The roof has been patched several times and is clearly at its “end of life” • Four personnel are assigned to this station each day and there are only two bedrooms. • No office for the company officer to meet privately with crew members. • Inadequate shower/bathroom facilities. • No decontamination area. • Fitness area is in the apparatus bay.
Options Provided b by D Davis K Kane A Architects • Option 0: Bring the building up to current building code. This includes a sprinkler system, elevator, ADA compliant bathrooms, new roof, plumbing system replacement, electrical system replacement, fire alarm installation, modified/upgraded HVAC systems, etc. Cost: $1.65 - $1.69 million • Option 1: Includes all of Option 0 plus renovations that include an addition to the front of the station to accommodate the elevator and new stair configuration, a first floor radio room, separate decontamination area with shower, gear and tool storage, SCBA repair area, and fitness space. Second floor renovations include new “day room”, kitchen upgrades, laundry, 4 separate dorm rooms, office, and fire pole for quick access to the apparatus floor. Cost: $2.6 - $2.9 million
Options Provided b by D Davis K Kane A Architects • Option 2: Includes all of Option 0 and Option 1 plus an addition to both floors to add space to make the building more functional. It also includes upgrading the front doors to bi-fold doors. Cost: $3.0 - $3.3 million • Option 3: Includes all of Option 0 and Option 1 and larger additions to fully accommodate the needs of an active fire station. This would include a closet for each firefighter assigned to the station and also includes upgrading the front doors to bi-fold doors. Cost: $3.5 - $4.0 million Constructing a new fire station from the ground up will cost approximately the same as Option 3.
