Summer School objectives •To prepare the future professionals in European Space Transportation with an intense one-month undergraduate level course providing: •Understanding of systems engineering and other disciplines related to space transportation •Practice of teamwork in a multicultural environment •Interaction with senior professionals from universities, space agencies and industry •Professional visits to research and industrial facilities, including Kourou •Development of a network of contacts with other young space enthusiasts •Discovery of a different part of Europe and even a new language •Optional visit the Guiana Space Centre, Europe’s Spaceport •To give to space industry and agencies an opportunity to: •present their work •contact new promising space professionals •send their own young engineers to a valuable training course •To give to Ariane cities and host universities the opportunity to: •Showcase their Space capabilities to the future professionals of the sector •Open the public lectures to interested citizens and communicate to the general public the importance of space activity for the local community 4 Updated on 9 March 2011

Summer School structure and organisation WHAT: The CVA Summer School is an intensive course on European Space Transportation , held yearly since 2000, designed for: Up to 40 university students (3d year or higher) and young engineers from space industry Over 350 alumni to date All coursework is done in English -Each year, a topic is chosen for a Team Project in FOCUS: space transportation. -Technical lectures -Professional visits -Language training -Intercultural teamwork -Cultural events and leisure -Team project presentations in front of a jury -Subsidized trip to the Guiana Space Centre Four weeks in July/August WHEN: A CVA member city WHERE: A university or educational institution HOST: SPONSORS: CVA member industries and other local sponsors 5 Updated on 9 March 2011

  24. Fifth reunion of CVA alumni • ESA’s centre for Earth observation is in Frascati, south of Rome. It manages the ground segment for ESA and third-party Earth- observation satellites, maintaining the largest archive of environmental data in Europe • ESRIN coordinates over 20 ground stations throughout Europe and cooperates with another 20 foreign ground-segment operators worldwide. • As well as home to ESA’s Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes, it hosts the project team managing the Vega launcher programme. 24 Updated on 9 March 2011

Optional alumni trip to Europe‘s Spaceport • 5-day programme open to alumni of all CVA educational courses and member organizations: • detailed briefings and visit of the Guiana Space Centre, Europe’s Spaceport • informal interaction with employees from companies working on site • discovery of the Amazonian rainforest and of Devil’s Islands • Personal contribution for alumni: approx. 600 € (50% of the actual total cost) • Dates: September 2011 (exact dates to be advised) 25 Updated on 9 March 2011

  26. Application deadline and requirements • Deadline: 31st March 2011. Please submit electronically to Ms. Magali Foulet: cva@ariane-cities.com all in English language: • a letter of motivation and detailed CV • a proof of university enrolment at least in third year in engineering • a letter of recommendation from a professor (for student candidates) or employer (for young professionals). Contact professors are listed on next slide • a proof of health and accident insurance valid in Italy for the entire duration of the programme is to be submitted later, upon confirmation of acceptance • Requirements: • Completion by July 2011 of at least the 3rd year in engineering (any speciality) • Ability to understand lectures and to perform team work in English • Personal contribution: participation fee, travel to Rome, health insurance, meals • Participation fees: • Students currently enrolled in a university of a CVA member city = 150 € • CVA member industry employees, and Euroavia members = 500 € • Non CVA members: 1.000 € • Acceptance notification will be sent to the candidates by 1st April 2011 (or within 30 days of having submitted the full application) 26 Updated on 9 March 2011
