What is the Green Flag Scheme?
What is the Green Flag Scheme? “The Green Flag Award Scheme recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world” Green Flag’s Purpose & Aims: - To ensure that everybody has access to quality green & other open • spaces, irrespective of where they live To ensure that these spaces are appropriately managed & meet the • needs of the communities that they serve To establish standards of good management & to promote & share • best practice amongst the green space sector To recognise & reward the hard work of managers, staff & volunteers •
Green Flag Award Judging Process Judges will assess the application and the site-specific management plan and all associated documentation (appendices). Stage 1: Desk assessment Worth 30 out of 100 points. At least 15 points are required to gain the accreditation. Judges will attend your site and assess whether the management plan is in practice on the site, and how well the Green Flag Award expectations have been met, by observation and by Stage 2: questioning staff, volunteers and visitors. Site Assessment Worth 70 out of 100 points. At least 42 points are required to gain accreditation. Total pass mark of 66 is needed to gain accreditation.

Top Tips • Plan • Utilise what you have! • Look at other Green Flag Applications! • Nominate one person to collate all the information and write the application. • Meet regularly to discuss progress. • Appendices are the key to a great application. • Take LOTS of pictures.
Reflection & Review • Once the judge’s decision has been made you will receive a feedback document:- • Feedback gives areas of strength & weaknesses • Working document • Will be used as the basis when you reapply • Excellent tool to plan future works • As a result of this feedback we have introduced Cemetery Surveys and changed which pesticides we use. • Future Plans
