Sts. Peter and Paul Church CEMETERY PROPOSAL
CEMETERY PROPOSAL • Our first options: • Sell the property. Low return due to commercial property not selling fast or for high dollars. • Develop the property. High cost to the Parish from fees, permits, and construction costs. • Find a chain to develop the property and collect rent. Problems if the chain goes under. 2
CEMETERY PROPOSAL • Started brainstorming ideas and met with the City of Hopkinsville. • The City is very supportive of a project to develop the property. 3
CEMETERY PROPOSAL • Again we met with the City to discuss various options, fees, and associated costs. Property will need to be rezoned and go through public hearings. • Tony and I spent time reflecting on this and he floated the idea of a Catholic cemetery open to all. • We asked for a meeting with Father Richard, brought him up to date and let him know we preferred the cemetery option. He gave us his permission to continue. 4
CEMETERY PROPOSAL • We planned our course of action. • Meetings were held with the following: • Cliff Russell, Cemetery Director, Diocese of Owensboro • Frank Giles, Hughart, Beard and Giles • Jeff Johnson, Hopkinsville Monument • Luther Carneyhan, West Kentucky Memorials 5
CEMETERY PROPOSAL • A proposal was developed and presented to Father Richard. • The proposal was made to the Parish Council, Church Staff, and the Finance Committee. • Permission from the groups was given to proceed even though there was not 100% support. 6
CEMETERY PROPOSAL • Plan of Action: • Get the property surveyed. • Combine all four lots into one. • Dig test "graves" • Keep the City informed of progress. 7
8
CEMETERY PROPOSAL • Results: • We have a completed survey the property is 1.97 acres. • The lots are in the process of being combined thanks to John Soyars. • Test "graves" have been dug. • After allowing for driveway, setbacks, and ledge, over 50% of the property is available for graves. 9
CEMETERY PROPOSAL • This will accommodate 900 graves. • We have an additional 6,900 sq ft situated on ledge 2'- 3' deep that we can place Mausoleums or Columbariums. They require a 2ft deep pad. • This will accommodate 35 double wide Mausoleums they can be built 2 or 3 high. Columbariums can be built to accommodate up to 300 urns. 10
CEMETERY PROPOSAL • Cemetery will be self-supporting. • Plots will be competitively priced with the other cemeteries in town. • Proposal must pass with 80% of the votes cast by Parishioners. 11
CEMETERY PROPOSAL • WE WOULD LIKE TO STRESS THAT NO PARISH FUNDS WERE USED FOR THIS PROJECT. • The survey was paid for by a generous Parishioner. • All other charges were paid for by Tony and myself, and we put in well over 1,500 combined hours on this project. • Questions? 12
