  28. English At Richard Coates CE School How to help with: • Reading • Spelling • Handwriting

  29. Reading in School A rich variety of reading throughout the school day to inspire children to love reading and to prepare them to be life-long readers.

  30. We achieve this through: • Shared reading • Guided reading • 1-1 reading • Reading for pleasure • Reading in curriculum subjects • Promoting reading at home (Bug Club books and on-line books)

  31. Bug Club • This is our main reading scheme within school. • It has coloured bands which the children move through to ensure that they make good progress in reading. • All children will have access to these books both in print and on-line. They will bring them home and change them every week. • Reading books will also be allocated on-line – use the Active Learn log-in. • Some older children will read books from the class library or from home; the teacher will check that the children are reading books that are enjoyable and suitable for their reading level. • However, all reading is valuable so encourage any sort of reading at home!

  32. Shared Reading Whole class reading of a stimulating picture book, story, novel, poem or non-fiction writing. Pie Corbett’s Book Spine - books which promote enjoyment of reading; rich vocabulary, characters and plots. Talk 4 Reading / Book Talk - promoted in all shared reading sessions.

  33. Guided Reading Ability groups of children reading with the teacher or teaching assistant. Focusing on the targets the children are working on in their reading. Groups of about 5 or 6. Reading, discussing, looking for clues, learning new vocabulary, analysing punctuation and its effects.

  34. Reading for Pleasure We plan for this to happen every day in school. Children read their own choice of books guided by the teacher. Class library and the reading areas are located inside the classroom. A quiet atmosphere with everyone reading in class and enjoying it! Teacher or Teaching Assistant may listen to reading during this time.

  35. Reading across the Curriculum Children find facts fascinating! Reading is promoted in every subject, linked to the topic or themes being studied in Science, History, Geography, PE, Maths. A great way to add to children’s vocabulary.

  36. Enjoying reading at home Read at home with your child as often as you can. Find a quiet time when you can sit quietly together with the book and share it. Talk about the story- get your child to explain the main events, tell you about the characters, encourage them to state their likes and dislikes. Read stories aloud to your child. Put lots of expression into your voice and try to make it fun. Read everywhere: menus, adverts, magazines, cook books, rules of a game, metro timetables…

  37. Spelling • Spelling rules will be taught in KS2. • High frequency and unusual words will also be taught. • Children will be using a variety of methods to learn spellings. • e.g. phonics, using root words, learning mnemonics, using shapes of words, learning about prefixes and suffixes.

  38. How to help with spelling • Tell your child not to worry about weekly spellings. • Learn a couple each day and tick them off. • Use ‘Look, cover, write, check’ and encourage your child to say the letters and sounds as they write. • Use post-its, wipe-boards, chalks, gel pens, highlighters, posters and ipads/tablets to make it more interesting.

  39. Handwriting • We use the ‘Letter Join’ handwriting scheme from EYFS to Year 6. • You can access it at home. • Log-in details will be provided tonight. • Can use laptop or tablet. • Please encourage your child to have a go. • Encourage sitting up in their seat, forming letters corrrectly and using a sharp pencil or handwriting pen.

  40. How to help summary • Talk about books and read every day with your child • Try to approach spellings in a fun and light-hearted way. • Encourage your child to access the on-line resources: Active Learn (Bug Club and Phonics Bug) and Letter Join. • Reward, encourage and celebrate! Then repeat this all over again!
